OT-ish Deleting AVI files

I have a curious problem.
I've suddenly noticed that I can't delete any AVI files from any of my drives.
If I try, there is a pause then the dialogue box comes up saying:

"Cannot delete xxx.avi. It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that may be using the file and try again."

As far as I can see, there are no programs running (well, after closing any that might be), and there are no extra processes going on in the background that I'm aware of.

Even after rebooting, I still can't delete avi files, even when in safe mode.
At the moment it only seems to be avi files, no other file types. And of course I can't get round the problem by renaming them, as the machine then claims again that they are in use by another program.

Any suggestions, solutions? My drives are slowly filling with .avi files...

Thanks,
Alistair

I had that exact same issue with Vegas 4, however, it's not happened with V5.

Try a second time deleting the file, after receiving the warning.

That worked for me.

Thanks, I've just tried that, and in the meantime uninstalled Vegas 4, DVD Arch 1 and SF6. Now running Vegas 5, DVD Arch 2 and Sound Frog 7.

No problems... (apart from Wave Hammer and Acoustic Mirror running as demos)

But...

I've discovered that I CAN delete files from the command prompt Dos Box.
But only if I haven't selected or tried to delete them from explorer.
Any file that I have selected (and/or subsequently deselected) can no longer be deleted from within the DOS box until I reboot and try again.

The mere act of selecting an AVI file somehow is marking it as off limits for deletion. (Deleting files using the dos prompt becomes a problem if there are spaces in the file name)

So I'm assuming something's up with explorer. I'm mentioning it in this forum as it's only AVI files that I'm having this problem with.

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alistair

I've noticed VV4 will not completely close some times. I have to use task manager to kill it.

Do you happen to have your explorer window set to preview thumbnails? A lot of time if you have a folder full of AVI files (or any video files) and have the explorer window set to preview, windows is trying to make a preview of the clip and it won't let you delete it becasue it is in use (trying to make a thumbanil) Usually if you switch it to list view or something like that you son't have a problem deleting them.
