OT-ish: Neo Player from Cineform

filmy wrote on 5/16/2007, 8:44 AM
Just in case anyone is thinking about trying the new (free, "never expires") NEO HDV player from Cineform, don't.

I just have tried it and it screws up a lot of things. In Vegas it will overwrite the render dll with a playback only one which means you will get an error message when trying to output via the cineform intermediate from within Vegas.

If you have AE or Premiere you may get this - it installs the QT cineform codec so when it loads I get a pop up about the Cineform license being expired.

I emailed David (_dan_) about this to see if it is an issue that could be resolved.

I haven't received your email.

However this is not a bug. You should not install NEO Player on a PC that already has a CFHD license -- as NEO player components are not licensed for encoding -- because it is free. This is a tool you can give to others that wish to work with your CineForm files, with them requiring a full NEO, Aspect or Prospect license. Unfortunately we can't prevent a newer free components overriding an older licensed codec, as Video for Window interface used by Vegas doesn't allow multiple installation instances -- if DirectShow was used this wouldn't be an issue.

>>>However this is not a bug.<<<

So than when loading Premiere and it gets to the QT importer the pop up window about the demo license being expired and to contact support is going to happen no matter what? That seems like a bug to me if this is a free, never expires, playback only thing. I could see this if it was the demo, and this is not the same pop up you get with the demo. When the demo expires you get a pop up with choices, one asking for the code. However this is just a pop up saying the demo is expired and to email support asking for a license code.

Or am I just missing something here? I did not see anywhere that one needed a license code for the NEO player/codec nor did I see anyplace to enter one.

>>>as Video for Window interface used by Vegas doesn't allow multiple installation instances -- if DirectShow was used this wouldn't be an issue<<<

So what you are saying is if someone has Vegas don't install. Keep in mind here this is supposed to be "is a tool you can give to others that wish to work with your CineForm files" so, in theory, I could edit in Vegas, send the file to someone who also has Vegas but needed to do, say, effects in After Effects and not only would the NEO install mess up Cineform output in Vegas because of the above mentioned VFW issue but also give them a pop up everytime they used QT?

Not sure tthat is a good thing. But either way I think it would be good to put some kind of notice up that Vegas users should not install this, even if they do not have a CFHD license.

The Quicktime thing could be a bug, yet it is not happening on other machines. Do you have the exact message? We will have to see if there are other reports. You don't need to license NEO Player, however the components are still protected from debuggers, just like the CineForm component that ships with Vegas.

You raise some good points. While NEO Player don't break Vegas for someone not using CineForm for encoding, nor does it break anyone user NEO HDV/HD. It just need to see if NEO Player can work the license magic Connect HD did.

Dan, I'm intrigued that Connect HD seems to have vanished from your site. When one does burrow down through FAQ the version you have available seems to be earlier (3.3.0.34) than I have installed (3.4.2.37). Have I missed something?
I was looking because I'm getting the occasional red screen with Vegas 7e.

I put in a support ticket 2 weeks ago re:ConnectHD including screen shots hoping to get some help for constant problems and no reply to date....

So Why Would I upgrade ???

I see it depends on one's path into your site. This time I found "Connect HD Becomes NEO HDV". So now I'll return to read all about it; hopefully the birds haven't gobbled up the trail of crumbs. This change doesn't seem to have been announced to customers.

Also seems difficult to actually get the last upgrade of Connect HD -- the promised email doesn't arrive and it's not being devoured by my spamkiller.

Connect HD is not longer officially available, but it can still be download from here : http://www.cineform.com/downloads/connecthdv342b38dl070405.zip

The reasons to upgrade to NEO HDV, other then all the new capture card support and QuickTime features, is the new v3 codec. The upgrade is only $59, which gets you a codec engine developed of Prospect HD.

Thanks David, have got the ultimate version of Connect HD and will go to NEO HDV. Was there a product announcement (other than NAB) which I missed? This thread was the announcement as far as I'm concerned. I'm surprised if I missed anything you put up on this site.

edit: reading about NEO HDV (on your site), it seems that its benefits come only with encoding with the new codec.
