OT(kinda..): VCD making, capturing in mpeg2?

1st off - I've searched tyhe forum because I thought I rememberd a post about capturing in mpeg2. I'd like to! haha. I'm pretty positive vegas can't, but is there any program that will? I hate capturing avi, then taking 12 hours to encode 60 minutes of just straight movie (unedited) in vegas, before I can even make a dvd! ha.

2nd off - A buddy of mine wants to know if he can take clips from his video and picture camera, and make a VCD somehow on his own computer. He doesn't have anything special. some clips are avi, some are mpg's (not sure mpeg1 or mpeg2 or what)..winxp.

thanks yall.

As far as your buddy goes, have him check out windows movie maker that comes free with XP, or via download from microsoft. Not sure if it does VCD or not, but its worth a peak.

mainconcept mpeg encoder can capture in mpeg2 (quite well) ...

but vcd's are mpeg1 ... not sure if mainconcept will capture in mpeg1 ...

vcd's (to look even OK) , take a bit of work in encoding --i doubt an on the fly encoder is going to produce quality results ..

...Not sure if it does VCD or not,...

Nope. Only DV-AVI and several variations of WMV.

There used to be a free program called VCD easy. I believe this was available at videohelp dot com, but I don't remember. VCD is usually Mpg1, although you can make what is known as an SVCD which is low level Mpg2. (you need to have an Mpg2 codec on your computer to use) An SVCD looks pretty good, but can only be played on a few DVD players, but most PC DVD programs will play them. It's just below DVD quality and except for the dark areas, it really can look good. Only good for about 45 to 55 minutes per CD, but that ain't too bad, considering it's a CD. VCD in Mpg1 is about the quality of video in a video game. (like the opening sequence of TigerWoods 2005) It's always compared as being similar to VHS, but I think it looks a lot worse. It's still watchable. I'll check and see if I can find "VCD easy" and come back and edit this.
EDIT: vcdeasy.org is where it is. It is NOT free anymore. It'll cost you $29.95. It worked very well if I recall.

Also SVCD material can be written as DVD-Video and played on most standalone DVD players.
For example, using DVDPatcher you must change entire file's framesize from 480x576 to 352x576 for PAL (or 480x480 to 352x480 for NTSC). Then this files can be used in DVDArchitect with 352x576 or 352x480 project settings.
After preparing such DVD to HDD folder you must set every VOB framesize back to entire SVCD format. Now burn it to DVD recordable media.

Kanst - that may be ok for some home dvd players -- but for one, most players will not play it correctly unless you also change the audio sample rate to 48khz (and ac3 in some cases) ..

you have a botu a 50%-60% of it working even then ..

I dont think DVDA will take 1/2 D1 files either (ti never used to)

there are pograms that automate the whole proceess (svcd2dvd) www.videohelp.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=37
