OT - Latest MS security release

TomG wrote on 8/12/2006, 11:12 AM
Has anyone else had problems with a cummulative MS security release (about 9 items which included an update to IE 6.0)?

I religously apply security updates every time they are release but this time IE 6.0 went ballistic when I linked to another website. By ballistic I mean that about 60 windows opened up all at once and they were all blank. This was initiated by a link to Yahoo maps.

I rolled back my system to yesterday and things work fine again. Not sure if this is just my problem or something much more widespread (and perhaps sinister???)

I believe there is a fix for that problem.
I just downloaded all 11 of them for a Win2K system and everything is fine. Also downloaded 9 of them for XP and everything is fine.

JJK,

I reloaded all of the security updates except for the IE one and things work fine. When you say there is a fix for that problem, where might I find this fix?

Thanks,

a fix for the fix. How golden. :)

if you have your firewall block ie & use another browser (firefox, netscape, etc) you won't have to worry about those updates any more. I blocked ie 100% and not even previews of webpages on my hd show up (which require ie to load).

TomG:
I read about it in the paper but I am old and decreped so I really can't remember what or where but people were upset about it. I believe the fix was already in the group of downloads.

I am still having serious problems with the latest IE security release (KB918899). The only way to fix it is to uninstall the security release (and then Windows Automatic update keeps bugging you about not have your security releases up-to-date).

This is probably the last straw I'm going to take from IE and am switching to Maxthon Browser.

So far, I haven't had any issues with the current batch of MS patches / updates. But apparently some people have been -- did you read the following articles on MS web support?

Don't know if this is related, but yesterday I could no longer do any data entry into pages displayed by Explorer. E.g. I couldn't have entered this post. I go to a box, left-click as usual and nothing happens--no cursor. It's become completely unusable. Installed Firefox and everything is OK. Did a number of virus and spyware scans, but nothing. Anyone else with this problem?

I've been running Maxthon (formerly MyIE2) for a couple of years. I love it. However, it is essentially just a "front end" for IE and most of the actual "behing the scenes" web browsing tasks are still done by the IE engine, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Nevertheless, Maxthon is terrific. The IE GUI seems postiviely primitive by comparison.

Yes, I have read the abovementioned articles. I can't believe there aren't more people complaining about this. I even have changed all my settings back to the defaults and no help. I don't even know how to describe what it does but on many links it will open up an additional 24-54 copies of itself with a blank screen and then mentions something about a null entry being made. It must be the GUI since Maxthon is a GUI to IE and Maxthon is working fine.

Some folks thought it was a problem with HTTP 1.1 and suggested disabling it but I did that and no help.

Many of us, of course, are shaking our heads as we read this thread on our Firefox browsers.

IE? Oh yeah, that's the browser I keep around just to test my website every now and then, just to make sure everything works okay on it...

Seriously, though: Sorry to hear that there's a bug somewhere. But really, Firefox is terrific and I have absolutely no reason to bother with IE any more.
