OT: Looking for info on Mic Techniques

I figured it's time to pay closer attention to my audio. As SPOT has said, "audio is 70% of the viewing experience" :)

I'm particularly interested in any articles/websites/books dealing with microphone techniques for concerts/stage productions. As well as placement, I'd like to gain a deeper understanding of what makes an instrument mic an instrument mic, that sort of thing.

At this point, multiple mics and mixers are out (can't dedicate a resource to it) but I'd like to hear opinions on things like stereo shotguns, point source stereo (Rode seem to have a rather nice one!!) and the use of discrete mics in coincident arrangement and any others that may be pertinent.

The goal is a good quality 2-channel result with a view to multi-channel down the road.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hal Lenoard (http://www.halleonard.com/) as well as some others have a full line of books on the subject of sound. One that I can recommend for beginning is called "Sound Check". Basics but very informative. Yamaha has recently re-written thier book "Sound Reinforcement Handbook". It is considered the bible for conecert sound people. Last time I checked, I believe you could download alot of it from their site. There is one great site, www.prosoundweb.com/, that is full of info. But let me warn you..........they aren't the nicest folks on their forum!!!!!

to give them a shot.

I run and operate a recording studio. Audio is my Thang'. I produce & engineer albums for artists and band.

I am one of the "Nice" ones that used to frequent the PSW, but as mentioned earlier, most of those folks are Old Jaded type of Recording engineers. They would rather smart off to you than give you a strait answer.

The rule that was given to me when my mentor trained me was to PASS IT ON !
