ot: macromedia projector file?

i've just received a copy of one of my projects that's been incorporated into a macromedia projector file (an .exe) on cd.

it looks fine, but i can only play it off the cd - if i copy it to the hd on my laptop i get an error opening it (can't find 'filename'.dxr)

there's going to be a series of these, released the same way, but i'd rather like to have them on my laptop (to demo) rather than swap disks around. is there any way of getting round this?

i'd prefer not to have to use a virtual drive if i can avoid it.

I do a little Director authoring myself occasionally and my guess is that the CD either contains hidden files and folders or you haven't copied ALL the files over onto your hard disk.

a .dxr file is a protected Director 'movie' file so I imagine that the project has been broken up into a series of .dxr movie files that are called by action in the main Director .exe projector. Note the term 'movie' here doesn't mean video it's just a term that Director uses for the application files it makes.

If you don't have "Show Hidden Files' ticked in your Options in Windows then you won't see hidden files and, subsequently, won't be able to find them for copying to your hard drive.

Make sure when you copy the files off the CD onto your hard disk to maintain the relative paths for all the files. Create a folder and copy the whole CD contents into the new folder and that should solve the problem and maintain relative paths correctly.

on my laptop i have 'hidden' files hidden (i use it to teach / demo with).

they're all there and happily work when transferred in mass.

btw, there was a folder containing mpg's of all the cuts they used. so thanks to you i can not only run the presentation from my laptop without the cd, but also pull the mpg's off to demo separately....

Yep, having the MPGs separate is typical in Director as it doesn't embed the video but uses the original video as an external file.

Glad that it worked for you. The authors did what I would normally do... hide the files they don't want the end user to see as it makes the main projector (.exe) much more obvious and the disk directory look less cluttered to the end user.
