(I am in no way affiliated with this site - as well demonstrated by my MAJOR lack of knowledge in the audio world in previous posts)

Power you mics with a small little package

This may give you the concise package to power your mini plug lapel mics that are in need of some power.

MD's and MP3 recorders work just fine without the need for a powered mic.

Are you talking about using built in mics? - no thanks (but to each their own)

Those are battery modules. The purpose of them is to provide a battery source for an electret microphone. Electret mics require between 1.5 and 10 volts DC. They will work when plugged into the mic input of a MD recorder that says "Plug In Power", but those inputs provide a tiny amount of voltage typically around 3 volts. When underpowered like that the electret mic will work, but it usually can't handle LOUD sounds without distortion. The battery module provides a larger source of voltage to allow the mics to utilize their full dynamic range usually at a little over 9 volts DC. That also allows you to use the typically quieter Line Input on the MD recorder for recording loud music. If the source has a lot of bass, some battery modules come with a bass rolloff filter.
Keep in mind, these are not preamps.

For not that much more money you'll soon be able to buy the Marantz field recorder that has balanced inputs and phantom power. The box records at 16/48K to CF cards, or mp3 if you need to fit a lot of audio, I'll just be buying big CF cards, they're pretty cheap these days.
