OT MIDI Controller

I know, I know, it's the video forum but some of you guys (ahem Spot ahem) are pretty handy with music as well.
I'm looking for a MIDI controller that won't break the bank. This is my first venture into MIDI but I suspect I will take a quite a liking to it soooo....
nothing so basic that I'll outgrow it in a month but nothing so complex that I'll never use half the features.
I've been looking at the Edirol PCR80. Any good?
Here's what I'm looking for:
USB control
velocity-sensitive
60+ keys
I'd like weighted keys but I imagine that adds significantly to the cost
Somewhere in the $250-$350 range.
Also, are there any el cheapo entry level soft-synth packages out there?
Thanks!

The Edirol can be programmed to work with Vegas, or rather Vegas can be programmed to work with the Edirol. Same with any of the Midiman tools. I just bought an M-Audio Radium for myself, but it's only 49keys, so....and not weighted, either. I don't know that you'll find new and weighted in your budget.
there are LOTS of entrylevel soft synths. Cakewalk has a great listing of them. There are a few freebies out there too. Just look for VSTi in google. Keep in mind, Vegas can't help you with this, but ACID Pro can. If you want to venture into the ACID Pro forum here, or better yet on the DMN, JR, Jeffrey, myself, and a few others can help you get started.
