ot: mp3 / music player advice please....

ok, i have wmp 11, and win amp.

the problem is i moved my music library (production music that is) to hard drive, in folders. i now need to access the various filews for auditioning.

a. wmp i can't mimic explorer view - with folders on left and expanded view on right (or maybe i don't know how). it seems designed as an itune alternative...

b. winamp works well with my ordinary music, but i really don't want to have to keep swapping playlists and folders etc.,

can anyone recommend a good, simple player that will give me an explorer style interface so i can quickly jump around sampling files, WITHOUT losing sight of my main folders?

sorry if this seems 'old fashioned', it's probably as i am ;-)

Windows Explorer works great for this. Browse your folders. Right-mouse-button click on the song you want to hear and click Play.

There used to be an incredible media player once upon a time. It was named Siren Jukebox. It had the only logical, useful, and meaningful UI of any media player ever. It had a super simple and usable system for browsing, playing, setting up favorites and folders. It was so simple and functional that i could even use it as a DJ tool. On the fly while it was playing you could build a playlist and even rearrange, insert, and delete files, and you could actually see the playlist as you were doing this!

It was a major-league loss when it was discontinued. Sometimes you can still find it on Ebay, though registering it is a bit of a pain.

Oh, and did i mention it was provided by our fine friends at Sonic Foundry? I think it's time to start another campaign to bring it back.

goodness, i remember that!

i've actually been using win exp just as you suggested, the problem is what i wanted to do was open folder (in left pane), highlight first track, hit enter to play, arrow key down to next track, hit enter again....

unfortunately i've got a rather large (though somewhat dated) back catalogue of needle drop, licensed, composed music, etc., acquired over 20 years. most of which is pretty useless for the work i do now, but (thankfully) i can't remember any of it by track name (most are simply numbered, no 'title' as such), so i can really race through it....

anyway, just happened to talk to a muso a few minutes ago who suggested 'media monkey'. downloaded the freebie version and i think i'm going to buy the full version - does exactly what i want WITHOUT all the other crap that mp3 player, juke boxes, etc., seem to want to add. though i think i might just start using the rating capabilities to narrow my choices down.

thanks for the suggestion though,

leslie

1st thing would be to Organize your library.
Always organize your Royalty Free/Editing Music, B-Roll, Images, Motion Backs, etc into certain folders on certain drives. This makes it really easy for your NLE (or you) to find a file that goes missing. Once this is done you can simply drag your entire Music, Video, B-Roll, etc. folder(s) to the player of your choice. This should import/create the Playlists without you having to do much of anything. To 'Audition' the file(s) you simply click the Playlist then the file.

Why do you feel that you need an explorer type interface?

Before, with a Mac & PC sharing the same Media over a Network... using iTunes in the manner mentioned I can see, audition, and drag & drop directly from iTunes into my NLE(s). This way my Media Pool stays Organized. When the project is over you can simply Save w/Associated Media to an Archive spot copying the Project's Media into your desired location. If you do NOT Save w/Associated Media it should still be fairly easy to reconnect your media since it is all organized.

I am now on a PC and use Adobe Bridge to view/audition my Organized Media Pool. Still dragging & dropping directly to my NLE's.

-- Of course, this is ONLY for my Editing Media... not my personal Videos & Music... although they are also very organized in their own folders/subfolders but kept separate yet played via Albums/Playlists.

thanks s2r,

i think my libraries are reasonably well organised (?), in as much as i know where everything is, just not what it sounds like ;-) and getting to them from vegas is pretty simple....

i'm so used to the explorer type interface that every time i try an alternative i just get frustrated. i watch my wife loading up her ipod and wonder why i could never get comfortable with it, i suppose it's teaching an old dog new tricks syndrome.

i use playlists in winamp for my own music, but never really felt the need for them in my production music - i might give it try with an upcoming project though..

thanks

How funny... I gave my iPod to my girlfriend because of it's functionality.
I went Old School and got an Archos gMini. -Damn thing plays anything/everything, doesn't force me to sync it to 1computer, and doesn't call for all the Hoopla, so I know what you mean and what you're looking for. Just haven't seen a tool of its type in use... only the way I've described.

Make sure to post back with what you find suites your needs. I'd be interested in also checking it out and seeing if it would help my workflow.

well, so far, media monkey looks to be a winner. it can be as simple / complicated as you like and does all i want - simply.

i'm sure there's more admirable software out there, but to be honest, i'm too old to waste time playing when i should be creating ;-)

however, if anything else does turn up, i'll certainly let you know.
