OT: Mpeg files play in Vegas 8 Pro but not Vista

I recently upgraded to Vista and I just noticed that I can't play my mpegs from my sony DCR-SR100 in Vista. I get the following error message while double clicking on a file; "Windows media player encountered a problem while playing the file".

I'm thinking it's because I don't have an mpeg codec but it's funny that Vegas Pro lets me view/edit it. The orginal Nero 6 software that came with the DVD drive that has the mpeg codec won't work with Vista as it gives me an error when I try installing.

Will getting Nero 8, in October, resolve my problem or do I need to contact sony about this?

I'm not any kind of expert, but I believe you have it right -- you need the right codex for Windows Media Player 11 .. I used some freeware called "sherlock" to see which codex were already installed and helped me find what might be missing.. Can't say if Nero 8 will install the right codec.

You are probably rendering MPEG2 files. Media player should be able to handle MPEG1 perfectly well. Vegas' MPEG2 codec doesn't export back out to the OS like some others do. Probably the simplest way around this problem is to install some sort of DVD playing software. Most DVD drives come with a free copy of something like PowerDVD. Once this is installed it's MPEG2 codec is available to Media Player.

This one may be the codec you need:

CyberLink Video/SP Decoder

InternalName = CLVSD.AX
LegalCopyright = Copyright (c) CyberLink Corp. 1997-2002
OriginalFileName = CLVSD.AX
ProductName = CyberLink PowerDVD
ProductVersion = 6.0.2919

You sure? I didn't install a DVD player on my PC but I ran run mpeg-2's just fine in WMP, MPC & VLC.

A .m2t file will play back fine in Vista64 the first time. If it loops, the picture is corrupted. Personally, I am waiting for Nero 8 being released next week - it comes with Showtime.
