OT: Multi-layered stills in TV doc

Documentary on CNN late one night last week.
Entitled "After Jesus" .
Chronicles early Christian church.
Features amazing animation of multi-layered moving scenes that appear as precision cut outs of paintings.
The resulting 3D effect was jaw dropping to this viewer.
Anyone on this forum aware of how that effect was achieved?
There seemed to be more at work than Photoshop.

Looks like that's it.
Pretty complex and is PS + AE application.
End result is effective for the right project though.
Pretty cool.
