OT: Need template for Wedding DVD jacket

craftech wrote on 1/23/2008, 10:39 AM
I reluctantly did a wedding for a friend as a favor. I don't do weddings. It came out very well and I used some digital stills for the DVD faces.

I searched for a wedding theme pre-designed DVD jacket insert and couldn't find anything reasonably attractive for free.

Since I did the entire wedding at my own expense I didn't want to spend any more money than I already have because I will probably be dead before I agree to do another wedding (originaly I was supposed to be a guest).

Does anyone know where I can find some pre-designed templates on the web?

Thanks,

John

I do weddings in my video business... and I'm always looking for better ways to do things. One MAGICAL new way of doing business I've crafted for myself includes NOT printing a DVD jacket. Instead, I dedicate my design time (and ink) on the DVD face only... then I place the DVD in a thin, CLEAR case. They are really inexpensive.

Trust me, in my experience, this is only way to go for wedding DVDs. My client's actually say, "Cool" when they see the clear case. I'll never print, cut, insert a DVD case jacket again!

you have stated that you do not want to spend any money, so this is probably not what you are looking for, but:

I bought a fairly cheap pack of DVD case labels from Meritline and downloaded the included software. I simply import two photos from the wedding, usually the front of the case being the couple at the "alter" and the back of the case being the location where the wedding took place. You may need to zoom in as necessary to fill up the case. Overlap the front picture down the spine, so that it adds color and you don't have an odd looking white streak.

I then put a text box at the top with the bride and groom's names and a text box in the bottom right corner with the date (Edwardian Script looks nice in my experience).

One vertical text box down the spine with the bride and groom's names again along with the "DVD" text icon to make it look more professional.

All in all, it takes me about 10 minutes and ends up looking very professional assuming you have easy access to photos from the event.

--NOTE--
The quality of the photos plays a huge factor in how they will look when printed out on a DVD insert

CVM,
that is interesting about the clear cases. Do you have a link to what you are using? Printing out Case inserts is a quick way to spend money on ink, so i'd be curious to see some alternatives.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

I wouldn't have a problem spending money on this if I did weddings or even wanted to. This is my first and hopefully my last. The faces of the two disc set are already inkjet printed and ready to give to them. The idea about the clear cases is pretty good. Maybe better for a single disc case though.

Morimoto,

Your idea was a good one and I do have access to some good digital photos. I though that maybe there was something with pretty graphics already done where you can just substitute your own photos. Buy maybe not for "free" I guess.

Thanks,
John

The cases I love are the http://www.meritline.com/ejdvsl102550.htmlEjector Cases[/link].

You print on the Injet printable DVDs instead of the extra work of slip cases.

Now templates? You mean artwork?
Keep it simple, picture of couple in their youth when they wed on the front.
Important info like DATE (so the groom won't forget) church name, address,
officiant's name. Inside a copy of the bulletin if they had one so they can
remember the wedding party.

I use Neato perforated forms. I can email the layout PSD if you want, that
you can print on 8 1/2 by 14 and cut with scissors. I made mine by scanning
their form then placing guide lines on a separate layer. Artwork goes on
additional layers. When I print I turn off the scanned layer background and guide lines.

Thanks for the offer RC. I actually have all kinds of templates for the layout. I meant an artwork or a graphics pre-designed layout requiring only photo substitutions to make it easier.

All of mine to date are of stage productions. Not an easy transition to a wedding layout.

I will probably just have to spend the time and do this from scratch.

I appreciate the response RC.

There was a guy at NAB last who had all manner of DVD cases specifically for the wedding business. Some were a mini photo album and DVD case, they certainly looked very pro and would save the grief of desiging artwork for the slick. At least one of the case designs would only require you to slip a photo into the frame. Whole case is covered with faux leather. I got his whole catalogue but finding it may take a while.

If this was a freebie, I wouldn't sweat it too much if you can't find a decent solution. They'll just be happy to have the video.

There are template designs for which you insert images into the design, but they're not free. If you were doing weddings, then it would be a good investment. But you're not.

Well these thing were only a couple of dollars more. I was going to import a couple of cartons to see if anyone would buy them. I figured the extra few dollars most of the wedding guys wouldn't pass on anyway. Oops, forgot the freight, OK they would be more expensive cause they're pretty heavy. Or maybe he not, I think we got to talking about shipping them straight from China.
If you're interested drop me an email.

One simple solution. Grab the DVD menu back ground, drop it into PS and scale it up. All the DVDA Wedding x backgrounds are fairly soft and don't look too bad scaled up to slick size. If they do get a bit too artifacty I just apply a little GB in PS.

One trick if you want a really out there looking slick is to print the background on normal photo paper and print the text on overhead projection film. Sandwich the two inside the sleeve. Gives a sort of 3D look to the slick.

If you have Photoshop Elements there is a lot of artwork in there just for weddings and scaled to a few kinds of DVD cases. There are so many kinds of DVD case nowdays, it's crazy.

Also, all the DVD printing software has case insert printing templates. Mostly crappy.
1. Epson Print CD
2. All of the adhesive label printing sets

I would clear case it and spend all the time and money on a TY Watershield disc and a great PP photo with text.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions guys. I really appreciate them all.
One of the forum members mailed me a predesigned wedding template. My friend's family and his wife's family absolutely loved it and the two DVD set as well. We all watched it together last night.

Thanks again.
