OT New 4GB SanDisk Cards

For those of you also into photography, there's a new memory card out...

"SanDisk joins Panasonic in the SDHC with their announcement of a 4GB Class 2 SDHC card. These SDHC cards, if you don't remember, adhere to the SD 2.0 spec, which supports cards over 2GB. The projected sizes for this current spec goes from 4GB up to 32GB.

Each one of these cards go for $199.99, but come with its own special SDHC USB reader bundled, because your 53-in-1 card reader doesn't support SDHC just yet.

One of the best features of SDHC cards is their high 5MB/s transfer speed. They make Speedy Gonzales look like regular Gonzales."

......................32 GB SanDisk cards.....wonder how much video they could hold....????

Very cool stuff...Oh, here's the link with a picture...

Well, not to throw stones, but I can still get a 1GB SD card for $20, about 1/10th the price per card (or 40% cost for same capacity). Not sure if those normal SD cards are as fast, though. And if you're shooting in RAW mode with your digital camera you'd be switching cards more often. All a question of tradeoffs, I suppose...

At a wedding last spring I talked with the photographer about feeds and speeds. He said he used only 1GB cards because if there was ever an issue with a card, he wanted to make sure that he lost only a small portion of the entire photo shoot.

So these superfast 5 MB/s cards make Speedy Gonzales look like Regular Gonzales?

How about this 150x 2GB SD card for $42.99 that cranks 22.5 MB/s read & 17 MB/s write?

And there are several others too, some for even less money.

And unless I missed something, they make all the other Gonzales guys look like Gonzales on crutches.

After a point, I would imagine that further increases in speed would only be significant for two possible circumstances:
1) If you are burst shooting as many fps as a camera can handle, or doing an auto-bracket where the camera burst-shoots 3 times at different exposures
2) For quicker uploading to your PC or handheld device

The example from coursedesign is a good price, but I don't think I'd pay loads more than that for something even faster.

Recent cameras have much faster DSPs, so memory speed differences matter more for recycling time after each shot.

I hate when I have to take a picture of something I see in front of me, and can't because the camera is busy storing to flash... That's when I quote from President Bush's TV speech yesterday: "s**t."

And I'm not auto-bracketing, although that can be very helpful sometimes.

I was looking for compact flash cards yesterday and came across this site.
performance database

It's a database of storage speed indexed by individual cameras. All the cameras are high end though.

OT: My wife needed to buy a camera for work so we went to B&H this morning. It was right after they opened and pretty empty. On our way out, she said, "I like this place, it's clean, it's organized, the signs tell you where you can go and you can always form a minyan.
