For Canon shooters a little bit of news today. They have announced there new XA10.

Good, bad or indifferent I've been using the Canon line up for the last 10 years. I was discouraged by the XF series price points. I'm glad to see this camera come out, but am discouraged by the 10x zoom for the run and gun purposes.

What is WRONG withs these guys???

They've halved the zoom range! Mad!

But it does have 1/3" - I could do something with that.

NDs?

Massive Screen, looks enormous.

I'm interested. Canon has great glass and the colour delivery is well-good.

LANC protocol seems kosher.

Interested. C'mon Canon, stick back the remainder of the zoom, please.

Grazie

This looks to be a little handy-cam sized thing (only 8" long from lens hood to eyecup).

At quick glance it looks like a Vixia HF G10 with an audio unit and an eyecup attached.

The 1/3" imager is a single 1/3" CMOS -- not a 3 x 1/3". Probably good for some pro uses, but I think it's just a dressed up comsumer cam. But again, probably a very useful item to many people.

1) It's a Region60 camera
2) OK. its a 1/3" Bayer sensor but Canon are at least using a sensor made for 1920x1080 and not some gigapixel horror for the tyre kickers.
3) OK, zoom range is limitied however this does seem to have a decent lens. Again less could be more.
4) Two card slots so you can keep recording and recording and recording.
5) Touch screen :(
6) Does native 24p. If they do a Region50 version with 25p I'd be interested in this as a B camera.

No NDs?

Looks like a mic will creep into fov?

No hotshoe, but the audio goes through it.

Does the flAsh drive work simultaneously as the cards?

There's mention of a 1.5 extender to go on top of the 10x.

Is that a new battery profile?

58mm diam. Good. Could use my exsisting WA?

Grazie

I received an email ad from BHPhoto - and these were placed side by side. Twins or clones. My guess is the "pro"model has more features, perhaps some just enabled in software, such as maybe 24 Mbps in the pro, perhaps less in the consumer.

Otherwise, I expect a lot of commonality.
