I wonder what the point is giving this speech, and especially what the point is to share with the audience how much money he has made.
When this is said, I heard about this kind of technique some years ago, the ability to point and direct sound like you do with a laser light. Interesting stuff, although I did not hear a thing :-))
The sound beam technology is available in commercial products today. Can be used for example to provide different languages to different parts of an audience, without interference.
And yes, it also is in military use.
Sound beams were used experimentally by the Germans during WWII. They were able to focus beams and refract them around hard objects, but this didn't change the outcome of the war (which they lost primarily because their fuel oil supply was successfully cut off, so their super powerful tanks couldn’t move).
Good old Woody. Great inventor, not a very good business man. The LRAD tech is great, mainly Govt/military buyers. They are using them for non-lethal crowd control, focusing the sound points to specific areas/people. Also use them on ships for communicating with other ships in close proximity, think Somali pirates.
Company name American Technology Corp, ticker symbol ATCO
American Technology Corporation designs, develops, and commercializes sound technologies and acoustic products. It develops and delivers directed acoustic products that beam, focus, and control sound over short and long distances based on Long Range Acoustic Device, HyperSonic sound, SoundSaber, and SoundVector technology platforms. The Long Range Acoustic Device technology produces directed acoustic beam to communicate even in ambient noise environments. The HyperSonic sound technology is a parametric speaker technology that creates sound in the air using ultrasonic frequencies above the normal range of hearing. The SoundSaber technology is a thin film magnetic speaker that produces sound of low distortion and high volume. The SoundVector technology is a directional sound technology for replacing sound pollution generating omni-directional alarm signals, sirens, hazard signals, and other directed warnings or tones. The company offers its products to government, military, homeland and international security, private and commercial maritime, and digital signage markets worldwide. It sells its products directly to larger end-users and defense-related companies, and through a network of worldwide independent resellers and system integrators. American Technology Corporation was founded in 1980 and is based in San Diego, California.
I am really disgusted by our use of the Nazi-originated term "homeland."
Even Peggy Noonan [Reagan's speechwriter and long time Republican consultant] expressed the hope that the Bush administration would change the name of the department, writing that, "The name Homeland Security grates on a lot of people, understandably. Homeland isn't really an American word, it's not something we used to say or say now." (Wikipedia)
