OK, I'm exaggerating a bit. But I do wish this thing had been around when I was doing lots of VHS dubs.
I just purchased a Samsung DVD-VR320 DVD recorder / VCR combo unit. It arrived yesterday. Hopefully, I'm not running afoul of the "no OT" posts policy, but I thought you guys might be interested in hearing about it.
I bought it because it has a firewire-in port. I expected to be able to use this just with the DVD-R half of the unit, but surprise! It works with the VHS deck, too... and it makes spectacular VHS dubs from DV tape over firewire! It also will automatically start playing the DV deck when you press record on the remote. Unfortunately, the DV connection is only IN; so dubbing from DVD or VHS to DV is still over analog ports.
I tried plugging it into my OHCI card and printing to tape or to DVD from the Vegas timeline (whew! I'm back on-topic!), but I couldn't get Windows to recognize it. I just get a "61883 bus device" with the little yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager. I'm guessing since the DV connection is only one- way, that it won't work with a computer signal.
Still, a very useful purchase, and at just over $200, I think I got a bargain. The DVD recording features are very nice, including automatic menu creation, and it can use DVD-R/W, DVD-RAM or DVD-R disks.
