OT: NTSC DVD to PAL VHS -- no color on tape

Recently had a customer come in who wanted a PAL VHS tape made from his self-burned NTSC DVD. We played the DVD from our player into our PAL conversion deck. When we check the PAL tape using the PAL to NTSC setting on the converter there was virtually no color on the tape -- just a hint here and there, but terribly washed out.

Any idea why this is happening? Would the inherent differences between PAL and NTSC be the cause? Any suggestions of a better way to do this in the future?

I'd be looking for bad cable, bad connection, or bad component in the input or output side of the converter. Going from NTSC to PAL is usually a pretty straight forward operation, and no, you don't lose all your color. It's a little softer because of the greater vertical resolution, but it's not a significant color shift. What kind of converter are you using?

Hi Spot:

I'm using a Panasonic AG-W1 -- old but very well maintained. I was surprised to see the color loss, and the problem could be in the cables, but I haven't had any trouble before this with other format conversions.

I'll trouble shoot and see if different cables, or using another Line In makes a difference.

Thanks.
