Owned one since Nov '02. I've made money from using it. It was my first miniDV. As a result I have had 4 major commissions - all using the XM2. Love the option of the 20x zoom for framing - must use on tripod though! Have had pixel issue coming up to warranty period . .went in to Canon Garage, they cured it. Now I've got a wayward zoom on the side . . I can live with it. Lots of Manual options. The Audio is great. Even the onboard mic is terrific - used it for very loud music events, mic ATT left on . .nice levels for Vegas. Prior to getting my Pannie Deck I've used the XM2 as a deck, no probs with Vegas 3 or 4 . .haven't tried V5, but would think it would also be faultless . .. anything else? Yeah - Would I buy another one? You betcha! . . But what with the new Canon XL2 finally reaching the "Chattering Classes" I may just hold on to see if there will be some downward absorption of features to a non-declared non-publicised XM3. The XL1s, I seem to remember, was the precursor in Canon's marketing plan to the upgrade from the XM1 to the XM2.
One of Vegas's filmmakers here - Mark2929 - also uses the XM2. He is very interested in film quality. He may chip in here. Have you done a search and read the threads on the DVinfo site? Here yah go .. a Full Forum devoted to the XM2 .. and GL2 . .
Thanks Grazie... FILM MAKER Love it .....My Experience with the GL2 Has been all good... My Purchase Decision was based on Much Study Of different reviews ... I started with a "Cheap Sony 1 Chip Cammy" from A Shopping Catalogue (bIT Of a toungue twister there) Stumbled across Chienworks site.. Saw some of the Marvelous work going on there and thought.. Yeah Baby.... This is Fun
On to to My Decision ...
In the end it came down to either the GL1/GL2 I Had both demonstrated in the shop and I really liked the GL1 BUT It was.. IMO.. All about looking good.. For example the 4 Channel Sound Inputs where fun as long as you dont mind recording in 12 Bits ect.... Also no LCD Screen But an Inbuilt TV mONITOR That I thought {Rightly or Wrongly }would be a drain on the Battery... Also the Interchangeable lenses were so Limited iN CHOICE.. And so Expensive. Whereas the GL2 Seemed More About Filming than Looks... I was still VERY disapointed though When I found out that the attachment for XLR Sound was not really an XLR input AT ALL...OH The connection was but that was all...ANYway I really Liked the GL1 Because it looked so Cool ...But in the end I thought about.. Manouvereability, Speed of setting up.. Run n Gun ect... Saved meself £700 And Bought the GL2 ...FOR £1500 ...Im so glad I did ....
I also Bought a senheiser Mic and a Canon Powered Mic The senheisser gets used with Me Portable MinI dISC FOR Recording speech or Something important ...
As for Picture Quality I have adjusted the Sharpness And Colour to my Liking I always Now try to Film In anamorphic and Manual Mode. Cant always be in manual mode... But Im getting more used to it ....Now though Im beginning to see Limitations and would like to move to a camera with better Controls.. My Ultimate Camcorder at the Moment is the NEW XL2 With a Mini 35 Adapter which would be about £6000 for the adapter and probable £3000 for the XL2 bUT What a Camera setup you would have....
I also think HDV Is going to change everything so its possibly best to wait for The Canon To have HDV Added...AWESOME..... I think that will come..Possibly after Sony releases there HDV Camcorder.... Personally speaking Im happy enough with my setup to wait For HDV To make its mark ...
Grazie I dont have a Shooting Schedule yet.... But anyway I will come straight out with it Would you like to play a Detective In a Film I have in the Pipeline ?
