From project is whatever your media file flags DVDA with. If it is widescreen and DVDA1 reads the flags correctly, it will be wide. If you shoot in widescreen, then hopefully it will read the file as widescreen. It could get confused if you use 2 different aspect ratios in the same project. I think you get the point.

Thanks for the reply. So, if I always shoot in 16:9, which I do, it doesn't matter if it is set to NTSC wide or if it is set to From Project?

Hm, no, that's not right. From project means just that, whatever your DVDA project is set to (ie, what does it say in File -> Properties).

If you add a 16:9 video to a 4:3 project, yes, DVDA will detect the file as widescreen. It will also flip the aspect ratio setting for that file to 16:9 in the Optimize DVD window. However, if you go there and change that setting to From Project, DVDA is going change that video so that it matches the main project's properties -- ie, 4:3. (I'm referencing DVDA 3 settings here, by the way. Alter as necessary for DVDA 1, as being used by the original poster.)

I just tried it: A 4:3 project with a 16:9 video. Left alone, the file remains widescreen. Set to From Project, it ends up letterboxed. Set it back to the default (it'll say 16:9), and all is well again.

On the other hand, if the project itself is already set for widescreen, then an individual file flipped to "From Project" will remain widescreen (or re-rendered as widescreen if it was brought in as standard aspect).

You might be thinking of Vegas' Match Media Settings button (which is quite cool).

So long as you set your project to widescreen, no. If your project is set to 4:3, it does. The project aspect ratio also affects how your menus are presented. (Best as I can tell, you cannot individually change the aspect ratio of menus -- they are always From Project.)
