Is there much worry about overscan on 16:9 flat panel TVs? I do not have one and would like to know how much of a safety margin to leave on my first wide-screen project.
Yes, 16:9 televisions overscan, perhaps not as much as old 4:3 TVs, but you still need to pay attention to the safe title and safe action areas. I believe that Vegas defaults to 10% and 20%, which is maybe a bit much. You could probably get away with 5% and 10%.
Both of my Sony's are set for (actually measured) approximately 2.5% overscan from the factory, just enough to cover up the data layer on top. If you are viewing 1080i and set it for full (super duper maximum full no overscan) it will always show that data layer and drive you nuts.
