OT: Painter 8 and Hardware Devices

I think im falling in love with this program. I dont think i got 4 hours of sleep since installing it. I was wondering though if there are any other Tablet devices besides wacom that are reliable and work with Painter 8?

The tablet that i was looking at was the Intuios2 6x8 from Wacom. The only thing that detracted me was the price. Im sure its a great deal for people who are in the graphic/ design fields however it is hard for me to justify the expense.

Are there any other companies out there that make a reliable tablet that fall under the $200 range? Thanks in advance.

I've used wacom for longer then I'd care to admit. Pricey but generally worth it.

On the other hand, my son uses a MUCH cheaper Aiptek http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=275322&pfp=BROWSE

Seems to like it well enough, and I'd certainly give it a look see.

Thanks for the link. I am defiantly going to research that unit. Does he use Painter? Do the two work well together?

Thanks Again.

Painter sometimes, as well as some P/shop, but mostly 3D stuff. So far works as well as my wacom - he loves both the tablet and laughing at the price I paid for mine.

Hey thanks for the update. I actually went ahead and purchased Painter 8 yesterday with a student discount, and picked up the tablet today before i read the updated post. So basically i got both for $200 dollars. All im worried about now is compatibility, but i will make sure to update this thread once i receive both.

Is this the same painter that used to be called Fractal Painter? I have Fractal Painter 5 and love it! I didn't even know they still made new versions (I remember version 5 origionaly came in a metal paint can. Who needs a box?!)

Yep same one. I think they sold it or it was bought by Metacreations. Then version 7 was owned by Procreate which is a division of COrel. NOW Corel has deemed it worthy to bare the Corel label and they just call it Painter 8.

All i know is this program is really cool. There are so many possibilities i cant stop using it. Version 8 only comes with a cardboard box but the Paint Can idea sounds really cool. Cant wait to get my tablet and start cranking out my works of art.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. But i received my tablet today and it works beautifully. I thought i was going to spend hours problem solving to get everything to work right. But i just plugged it in, XP detected it immediatly, and opened painter with no problems. Under :30sec and i was up and running. My kvm switch, trackball mouse, pen, and tablet mouse all coincide without flaking out.

Thanks again Mikkie for pointing me in the right direction. The funny thing is i spent 3 days trying to cross reference graphics tablets before i posted my question on the Vegas forum. All i came across was Wacom and some older CAD models. I have nothing against Wacom but i was planning on working overtime for the next 3 months to afford one.

Small complaint if anyone is interested: The 12000u is a large tablet, but there is no way to elevate it from the table. I like using it in my lap with my leg crossed. But i might decide to make an elevated shelf in the future if that becomes a little uncomfortable. I am kind of used to using things that have a slight angle to them.
