Yes Jay, the signal is still compressed. This happens as a function of the camera's electronics, not the recorder. It only records what's fed to it.

Correct -- the DV compression takes place in the camera. It is then fed to the tape drive and to the firewire port.

So what DV Rack receives (and what the FireStore receives, and what a computer captures) is always the compressed output.
