OT: Player problems with Vista 64? Try Aero on!

Hi,

I've been having all sorts of playback issues with Windows Vista 64-bit with multiple media players like VLC and Zoom player. Horizontal tearing, playback hiccups etc. Yesterday I turned Vista aero on and seems like the problems are gone. Just finished watching an HD quality movie that looked perfect and smooth. Haven't done any major testing on this one but a suggestion for those who are having problems. Try it out and let me know if this is indeed something to look into!

Yes, Vista video rendering to the display works much better with Aero turned on - this enables 'desktop compostion' i.e. seamless mixing of video with the rest of the desktop.

In the 'Home Basic' versions of Vista you need to do a bit of registry modification and then choose the 'Vista Standard' desktop colour scheme (Aero isn't available in these versions).

hmmm... I have aero turned off on my account on my wife's laptop (looks like win2k) but videos play back fine.

Perhaps there's some automatic functions that override the player's setup when aero's on?

Could be. I havent really looked into it that much. But VLC, Zoom Player and Quicktime seem to be playing smooth as one could hope with aero on. I never had a problem with Windows Media Player though, if it played a file it always played it smooth.
