The H.264 standard is supposed to be an improved codec for HD distribution, however, there are currently no players on the market to play this format. I beleive there are some Playstations that use this format, however, in a reduced frame size. AFAIK, MPEG2/m2t remains the format of choice for HD.

PS3 can play back Vegas rendered HD files with no problems at all.
