ot: portable hd dv tape recorder?

completely off the wall, but does such a thing exist?

i HAVE to shoot tape for a number of clients - and YES, they DO know about cards, etc.,
at the moment i'm shooting with a z5 onto both tape and cf (for my own productions the tape is a hand archive, not that i've ever needed to go back to one).

i was toying with the idea that i might get another camera, something along the lines of a ex1, whatever. however, if my z5 went down i'd still need to record to tape...

yes, there's still a need for tape ;-/

Can you shoot with whatever, convert to HDV and deliver on tape?

hi peter,

could do, just that when i shoot for, eg.abc, i send the tape back with the reporter immediately after the shoot. ditto with all my tape clients.

i was living in hope (don't we all? ;-))

You should be able to get an HD VCR. They're ~$1k (portable) to ~$50k (rackmount) at bhphotovideo.com.

Of course there's HDV & DVCProHD (Panasonic's HD tape format), then you might still be able to find DVCamHD, D-VHS & I think Sony also made a HD Beta format but I forget.

There used to be some decent HDV record/playback decks for ~$5k a couple years ago (I looked in to one) but not any more. :?

Leslie, that unit is NTSC...... PAL version at http://www.videoguys.com.au/Shop/p/3114/sony-gv-hd700-hdv-video-minidv-vcr-w-7-lcd-screen-gvhd700.html, but the price seems a little steep considering the almost parity between AUD$ and US$.....

The GV-HD700E as far as I know is the only battery powered HDV VCR.
It's not as small as the clamshell DV units from the same line thanks to its larger LCD. Runs off the same batteries. Aside from the LCD screen it is basically a Z1 repackaged as a VCR.

What would worry me about using it in the way Ushere proposes is the use of a 4 pin firewire cable to connect it to the camera. I'm not certain if it will syncro record and there's no easy way to mount it onto anything from memory. I think my M15 will syncro record but whilst that's definately a more robust VCR there's no provision to power it from battery.

Here is the link to the PAL version and it is quite a bit cheaper than the link to the Austrailian retailer...they ship internationally and are very reliable...if this item is what you are looking for!

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/522122-REG/Sony_GVH_D700E_GV_HD700E_PAL_HDV_Video.html

I have no association or vested interest with this retailer other than being a satisfied customer!
