OT: Print Work

Harold Brown wrote on 11/24/2008, 4:35 PM
I am starting to do more print work to go with the DVDs and not sure photoshop is the way to go. I have version 7 and it is perfectly capable of creating the covers but is it the right program to use?
I own MS Publisher 2007 but I haven't really tried using it for anything other than opening clients work. I have looked at Xara Xtreme Pro 4 and Corel Draw 4 as possible candidates to replace photoshop for artwork.

Just not sure what the right thing to do is. Any advice?

Thanks,

Why replace software that was made to do exactly that? If it is the learning curve, then go with what is comfortable for you and fits your workflow. It may be worth learning for you however... but I can't be the judge of that.

Photoshop will probably have more tools than you will ever use, but they are there when you do need them. Plus there are a lot of tutorials out there- on youtube even.

PS is the right tool.
MS Publisher is a different tool. I've used it to create a booklet to go with a DVD. I tried to get a printer to pint the booklets as they were a pain to print, staple and trim. Every printer wanted InDesign files, groan.

No printing company likes Publisher files.
Every printing company likes PDF files.
I print my Publisher files to PDF and everyone is happy.
The only thing that would make me happier is InDesign.

There was a day when print shops would "rip" from all types of sources - even Publisher files. But not now.

PDF is what I do now. We have come a long way in publishing to PDF - and it is everywhere. Time was you had to purchase the PDF wirter - yeah? I am now finding it on all sorts of s/w.

So, for me, I find http://www.primopdf.com/PrimoPDF[/link] is most excellent, and it is a freebie too. I have it as "another" printer for all my applications

Try it, you will NOT look back. Unless you are already at the INDEX page . .. . [wink]

Grazie

Grazie,
Thanks, that is an incredible program!
I put it on my Vista laptop and pdf'd an annual report from excel "out of the box."

It's fast, configurable, simple; IOW, too good to be free!

Thanks for the input. I have been using Photoshop 7 for years (I had to download a patch and try to install Photoshop about 4 times before I got it to work on Vista 32 Ultimate so next operating system I will probably have to upgrade). My client previously was using a company that used Corel Draw so I thought maybe I need to spend money in that direction instead of a Photoshop upgrade.

PS
I started using PrimoPDF a few months ago to Publisher files on the net. I agree, it is a great product.
Thanks,
Harold
