OT: protecting pictures on a site...

FuTz wrote on 9/29/2005, 9:13 AM
I'm asking since I just did a little research on the net with no success and I know there are some guys here who are quite good at programming...

Is there a way, with Dreamweaver or Flash, to "disable" the right button on a site so people can't copy the pictures in a gallery ?
Or is there a way to program something that allows downloading of pictures but with a nice big watermark that would appear on the copy but not on the site?

Any free solution / suggestion out there or I have no choice but go with the "official" and quite expensive watermark process?

With pretty much everything on the web if you can see it or hear it....there is a way to save it whether it's legal or not....people just don't seem to care anymore. Even if you disable right-click the image is still saved in your temporary internet files so anyone with pretty basic knowledge of computers will still be able to find it and save it if they want to.

Even if you use flash you can still open the picture...do a print screen the paste it and crop it and you have the picture.

Watermarking the photos is another option.

The answer is yes to the disable question. However, its been too long since I did this, so I don't remember how. Here are some links that may have answers:

Doing a Google search for "disable right click" will bring up tons of answers/suggestions.

There are many ways, besides the right click, to get the picture anyway.

To add another obstacle, put a transparent GIF over your picture. This will be invisible, but if somebody right clicks or equivalent, they get the useless GIF.

We use a program called ImageSafe. I see they are at version 2.8 now, we are still using verison 2.5 and it sitll works fine.

The other methods just seemed too easy to overide - the right click disable is a very basic script that can be bypassed without issue. Placing the image into a flash file works to a point but all you need is something like Snagit to bypass that. What I like about ImageSafe is that is takes the image and puts it into a file that can not be viewed unless you have java turned on plus you can hard code a URL into it so no one can hotlink the images from outside. On top of that you can place text over the image that will somewhat distract people from doing the Snagit method.

Also of interest is a little side product called MovieSafe which works the same way.

I thought I'd add: You can take a picture of any picture with a "Desktop" pic taker and they look just about as good as right clicking it. So a transparent gif or these other programs won't work on that. They'll just fool the people that don't realize a Desktop pic taker can get around it. The Desktop pic taker will take a picture that looks just the way you see it.
A watermark that can't be cropped is the only way to go, for real safety.

Watermark on the viewable image is the only way. I laugh when I encounter a site that uses JavaScript to disable right-click. They obviously haven’t found their Print Screen button on their keyboard yet. I use SnagIt all the time. (great little program for putting together tutorials by the way)

Bottom line: if you can see it, you can save it so make sure the picture has a watermark.

The safest most surefire way NOONE will get your image is....

don't post it. keep it to your greedy lil' self! fine, we don't want your picture anyway! i mean c'mon, we can share our views with you, but NOOOOOO, you don't want to share your precious lil' pictures. SORRY 'Mr. My-Picture-is-to-valuable'!!!!

I think Futz needs to decide what he's trying to protect. Obviously you can do a printscreen, or you can just pull out your trusty digital camera and take a picture of the screen. However, the results won't be very good. In most cases, I would think, you are going to try to protect the high-resolution version. Right-click disable certainly makes it more difficult for the casual user to get to that.

Any copy protection scheme can be defeated. However, if your goal is to reduce, rather than eliminate, all unauthorized copying, many of the suggestions in this thread can certainly help you do that.

IMHO, there are lots of reasons why a person might want to right click on one of your pages ( like bookmaking, people bookmaking your pages is good ! ) and to me it is completely annoying when people disable it. Especially when there are so many simple ways to copy their stuff if ( as people already mentioned ) if that's what I wanted to do.

I'm flattered when someone wants to save one of my pictures or videos to keep. Also, if they save a video to their own hard drive, they're not using any more of my bandwidth to re-download it.

Take a look at my stock footage website and you will see over 700 watermarked jpgs that I made in Vegas - simply by adding a watermark track.

The stills are all horizontal and the .wmvs are slanted watermarks.

Thanks for solutions guys. Yes, I knew about Print Screen key, Camtesia, etc... The question was also a technical one to get as much info I can on latest developments regarding this since I'm no geek at all concerning security / protection and all that stuff and lately I was surprised, going on a Flash built site, to realise I wasn't able to copy pictures from his site; no such option using right click. I liked it.
Filmy, this program you're talking about sounds great...

I'll go with my first idea: put relatively low rez pictures online and forget about hi-rez ones.
Watermark service is interesting in that way: keeping track of where are your images and/so how they're used but I'm certainly not living out of it now, so...

And no, I don't want to keep my "sweet little images" just for myself in my "little tiny corner of a paranoïdy world". Pfff...

In fact, I'm planning to put some downloadable clips on the site in the future so they spread as much as they can.
