OT: PSP File naming convention

p@mast3rs wrote on 12/18/2005, 8:21 PM
I have noticed that some of the PSP tools out there automatically change the file names to something like M4V80003.mp4 and that it is stored in the MP_ROOT\100MNV01 folder. My question is if I render AVC with a different file naming scheme i.e. testing.mp4 will the PSP still recognize it or does it have to be named like M4V80003.mp4?

I dont have a PSP to test this out on as I am helping out a friend.

Thanks.

It must be in the cryptic naming system. :(

from ign.com:

"Before you begin transferring video to your PSP, you'll need to set up the directory structure. In the root of your memory card, create a folder named "MP_ROOT", and then inside of that folder create another folder called "100MNV01" (both without the quotation marks).

Before we continue, you should know a bit about the PSP's video naming convention (and really all of Sony's products). Video files must be named M4VXXXXX.mp4, with the XXXXX part being the video number. For example, your first file could be M4V00001.mp4. You can number the files whatever you want, though every file must follow this convention, M4V followed by five numbers and ending with .mp4."

Who came with that stupid idea? Ive been trying to convincemyself to invest in a PSP but its getting harder and harder. Heres a dumb question, how are you supposed to know what videos are in each file if we are forced to use the cryptic name stuff?

The naming convention depends on whether you are doing MPEG-4 SP or MPEG-4 AVC compression on videos.

For AVC, the directory structure is as follows:
MP_ROOT\10xANVO1 where x is a number e.g. 0,1,2,3,etc
The file name structure is:
MAQxxxxx.mp4 where x is a number e.g. 00001, 00002

For SP, the directory structure is as follows:
MP_ROOT\10xMNV01 where x is a number e.g. 0,1,2,3, etc
The file number structure is:
M4Vxxxxx.mpw where x is a number e.e. 00001,00002

Don't forget ,each video will require a corresponding .thm file of the same name if you want a video thumnail on the PSP. This is essentally a .jpg of certain quality and size - can't remember exact details.

I did go into length a while back the difference between the way Apple intergrates vs Sony intergrates userbility! I use the new PSP Media Manager to take care of most of the hassles of the above - still no iTunes though.

Actually, when preparing your video for uploading to the PSP, you can select any identifying frame you want and make that your thumbnail. You can also name the clip anything you want. When you complete the upload, you go to the Video menu selection and there is your clip, identified by name and visually. It actually looks great. I am sold on the PSP as a portable reel holder or clip holder that can be used when you want to show your clients examples or get their opinion.
