I'm 56 and out of touch with the video game industry. What could this product be used for to create new revenue opportunities for a video production company or it's website?
I use a portable DVD player or a PC to show my clients examples of my work. The DVD player is half the cost of a PSP and has better resolution and it doubles as a monitor for my camera.
I would like to have a PSP but I don't see revenue opportunities for anyone except the major movie distributors.
I also often find myself saying "why didn't I think of that" when someone finds a new revenue stream with a different type of product.
According to reports today at Reuters, Wal-Mart are set to ditch support for the UMD movie format. No more PSP movies at your local Wal-Mart store. With sales on Sony's proprietary UMD format reduced to a trickle, other stores are also decreasing UMD movie shelf space.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment has completely stopped producing UMD movies, according to executives who asked not to be identified by name. Said one high-ranking exec: "It's awful. Sales are near zilch. It's another Sony bomb -- like Blu-ray." Hang on, has Blu-Ray bombed yet? Don't get ahead of yourself, Mr. Executive.
Buhbye UMD Movies
Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment are also jumping the sinking ship. As bluntly put by a high-ranking exec: "We are on hiatus with UMD," he said. "Releasing titles on UMD is the exception rather than the rule. No one's even breaking even on them."
The President of an unnamed top-6 studio revealed that nobody is watching movies on PSP. "It's a game player, period." This quote will disappoint Sony, who were going for the whole hog portable media approach. Will Sony use a similar approach with the PS3, and will it bomb?
