Did you run QT & tell it to take off the task bar icon?

I eventually just renamed the qttask.exe file.

the program is loaded into the STARTUPS instructions in the registry. if you're adept at making registry settings, you can delete it from here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run

Alternately, there's a few programs available that will access the registry in a safer way. My personal favorite is UltimateTroubleshooter. UT lists every running Service and Process and provides a recommendation of what to do with it. It'll point out running processes on your machine you didn't know were there.

Hi Jim. Jim from Michael Schenker Group? haha If you have webroot's spysweeper or the like, it notifies you that qttask is trying to install on start up and you can just say no. That's if you don't want to dive into the registry like Bill described. Derek

Linky

Besides Ad-aware and Spybot, screw installing any more spyware apps, etc. Follow the link above and manage all autoruns.

or you can open QT and uncheck it loading in the taskbar (but it could reappear later).

Guys, there's a simple setting in Quicktime that lets you turn off the task icon (and exe). No need to do anything more elaborate than that.

The QT preferences often get lost. In fact many of those utilities overwrite frequently with updates.

The best way to fend off qttask is to go to Start, Run, and type "msconfig". Then click on the startup task and disable qttask, usually near the bottom of the list.

While you are there, also disable jusched, and all things Adobe, logitech, and other stuff you don't like lurking around.

whoa!!! I had forgotten all about msconfig. that's certainly the best method!

But it doesn't really help in the end because next time you start Quicktime the msconfig entry will be selected again.

in my experience, once you remove qttask from the startup menu. it wont be back until you re-install quicktime. that's one reason i hate apps like quicktime or real video. they have so much spyware and nuisanceware. the marketers in those companies run things and the users take a back seat.

In my experience, I can remove QT from start-up, using MSCONFIG, then the NEXT time I use QT it back there. Soooo... I have NOW set the preferences for QT within QT to NOT be part of my Quick Start bar. Let's see if that's got the pesky critter!!
Grazie wrote on 1/11/2007, 11:21 AM
Yup! That did it!

Thanks Grazie! I haven't ever taken the time to search through all these pesky but needed apps to see their preferences.

I'm sure it will re-enable itself when I update though! Derek
