OT: Quick Camera Question

xjerx wrote on 4/30/2005, 8:44 PM
I'm shooting a short movie in may. I'm looking at the Z1U, however, my budget is so low, that $5,000 is a stretch.

Anyway, my question is, what does the Z1U offer over the FX1. I'll be recording audio seperate so i don't really need the dual XLR. Would the FX1 do the job?

Oh, and I will be shooting 1080/30i

thanks
jeremiah

PS - The plan is to also sell the camera when finished. However, they don't seem to be selling well on ebay. Any suggestions on where to sell?

Have you considered renting the camera?
You can rent a Z1U for under $300/day and the F for even less.
If you're only going to shoot for a day or two, you can often make a deal with the rental house to get the camera Friday afternoon and return it Monday AM for a one day rental.

Vic's right, company I work for charges less than AUD 300 / day for the Z1 and we only charge one day for a weekend hire. I'd imagine also you might be needing more than just a camera and most rental companies have a lot of the odd stuff you need like dollies, cranes and reflectors.

I know this doesn't help much if you're not near a big city with a rental company but if you do, I'd start ringing around.

Due to the length of the shoot I would end up paying more for rentals than if I just bought it.

Don't understand - recording audio separate - no sync sound?

If so - (and there are others that know better than me) - I'd say you'll be fine with the F - professional audio is definitely one of the BIG qualifiers, expecially when bucks are a problem.

I'll be recording the main audio to DAT, but the camera will still picking up audio from its mic. So, I'll just sync it up in post. I know, a little extra work, but I enjoy it.
