OT: Registry cleaner 64 bit or Reinstall?

xberk wrote on 9/13/2008, 9:16 AM
Can't get unstuck on 8.1 installation. Windows Installer seems broken somewhere, probably the registry? .. The 32bit part of Windows Installer working. 64 bit seems to be the problem. /unreg /reg does nothing. etc. etc.

Does anyone know of a solid registry cleaner that will run on Vista 64 Home Premium? -- I've always avoided these things --

My other choice is to Repair/Reinstall Vista -- Have never tried a Repair install on
Vista 64 -- THis might fix Windows Installer.

Vista 64 has a ton of updates. Just did 7 today. Maybe they will jog something loose.

Make sure you are running Vista SP1. Your version of the installer should read:

4.0.6001.18000

There is also a version 4.5 of the Windows Installer for Vista, but I wouldn't mess around installing it. Mine is:

4.5.6001.22162

I have it, because I am a beta-tester for <shudder> Microsoft (Not a big deal. They let just about anyone beta test at least some stuff). The final version 4.5 (KB942288) is available for download at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5a58b56f-60b6-4412-95b9-54d056d6f9f4&DisplayLang=en

I wouldn't install it, unless your absolutely need Vegas 8.1 and can't get it to install.

Already installed 4.5 -- did no harm that I can see but no good either.
I have no problem installing or uninstalling 32 bit aps. Can't do anything
with 64 bit aps. I"m getting "windows installer service could not be accessed" ..when
I try to install any 64 bit ap.

Tomorrow I may do fresh install of Vista 64 on blank drive to see how all the defaults
line up in the registry, windows folder etc. I'll try the install on that setup with
logging on and maybe then I'll see what gives.

Unfortunately, when the Windows Installer gets screwed up (usually because of a registry error created by accident by either an previous install or an uninstall), it gets pretty difficult to straighten the mess out.

I'm not surprised that 4.5 did nothing. It seemed like a minor update to me, probably related to installing specific software. There's not much else you can do. I'm assuming that you are running the Vegas 8.1 install program "as Administrator" and that no other programs are running, including anti-virus software.
