OT: Running WIn7 Pro 64 bit

Cliff Etzel wrote on 9/7/2009, 10:20 AM
I made the plunge this labor day weekend and installed WIn7 Professional 64bit on my desktop.

I'm having to get use to the interface since I've always used the classic menu and interface and that seems to have been removed (classic Menu option) from Windows 7. Still getting a sense of how everything works on Windows 7 but it seems to be stable and a little faster compared to Vista Ultimate.

I've gotten all my apps installed and they seem to work fine so far.

Any others out there running Windows 7 have any comments, hints on the latest offering from the folks in Redmond???

Hi,

WIN7 Ultimate x64 works fine here with VP9.0b (both 32 and 64 bit versions). Stable and fast.

The only drawback so far is that WIN7 has a problem with 1394b (FireWire800) drives, running natively (with window's own drivers) only at 15MByte/s transfer rate (should be close to 80MByte/s). Installed drivers from Sunix (the PCIe adapter board manufacturer). Was able to (after some blue screens) install them. Now I'm back to 78MBytes/s transfer speed, but this /"%"#%&"#¤ driver does not recognize any of my FireWire cams! So its either no cams and fast external HD's - or everything slow at 15Mbytes/s...

Hopefully the final release of WIN7 64 has a better driver...

Christian

How are you all getting your hands on WIn7 Professional 64bit at this point? I pre-ordered it but was told that it wasn't being shipped until mid-October.

Is it a "pre-release" that has to be removed prior to the full version being installed?

Yes, it's a pre-release, just for compatibility cheking, not for distribution...

Have been running Windows 7 x64 for several months now - and with Vegas 90.b x32 and Vegas 8.0c (both with >2 GB setting).
Everything works well and fast.

One problem, however: Windows 7 explorer can show video media as thumbnails - but draws a fat old-film-looking frame around the thumbnail and so hides some of the content.
It seems that it must be so (by design) so I have got the explorer alternative "ultra explorer" instead.

No. Running Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit RTM (VL) for a week and a half. Runs faster than any previous OS from Microsoft.

RTM is the real thing.
Beta and the RC1 must (so they say) be deleted totally before installing a real Windows 7.

running here fine too. in fact, wonderfully well!

recommend yamicsoft win 7 manager as well - lets you tweak a plethora of options, incl. right click....

Running Windows 7 Pro x64 bit also. Everything seems to run just as well as it did on Vista x64 except feels a bit snappier. No problems at all.

You can work around this limitation and upgrade your RC to RTM. (or between any versions)
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3075/how-to-upgrade-the-windows-7-rc-to-rtm/

this just stops the windows installer upgrade tool from automatically preventing this upgrade, it does not do anything else. So, it unsupported.

I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64bit RC but I also have Win7 Pro 64bit RTM install disc just waiting to go. I've been putting it off because I just got up and running on 7 RC and it works so well. I didn't expect RTM to come out when it did so now that I have it I guess I really need to bit the bullet. Everyone at the MS Win7 tech forum says don't try to upgrade from RC to RTM, they suggest a clean install. But then go ahead and tell you how to hack the install file to trick the installer into letting you upgrade if you really want to.

From the previous comment it would appear this hack may not work for me anyway as I'm going from RC Ultimate to RTM Pro.

Take it from me, just take the time to clean install. It may take you a Saturday (while watching football), but when you get done rebuilding your system you will not be disappointed.

I hacked the installer to upgrade from Beta to RC and experienced some isolated weirdness with Vegas installation and other items... I'd say clean install, I think the permissions or environment variables get screwed up someplace when you don't.
