OT-Set Top DVD Recorders with firewire ports

I keep seeing these set top DVD Recorders, not the ones in the computers but self contained units. I'm seeing them with the DV plug in the fronts now. Very interesting.

Anyone have one of these and what would be the advantage of that DV port ? Being able to dump MiniDV footage right to a recordable DVD? Perhaps using the unit as a pass through as well ? I dunno...any thoughts ?

They do have their place in the scheme of things. Some of them you can connect a DV camcorder or VCR to and queue the player so that when you hit record on the DVD burner the player goes into play. Neato. But you are stuck with the rather horrid caned menu that the recorder creates and adding titles can be PAINFUL.
I've just picked up a client who'd tried doing DVDs using these things, bought 4 of them and well they worked but he's had serious compatability issues and well the look of the finished product is pretty poor. Nothing beats a decend two pass encoder and even the default menus in DVDA look much better.
One good use for these things though is getting material back from a DVD, only as an 'If All Else Fails' solution but they're what we've had to resort to with DVDs from the DVD camcorders.

Ahhh...yes.....The DVD Camcorder. That's probably the most useful function right there. I've YET to hear a positive story from anyone that bought a DVD Camcorder.

Well here's a postive story. I heard of someone who had theirs stolen. For once a crook got his just rewards.
