OT: Soldier going to Iraq - Camera donations?

Hi everyone,

I just met a young woman in my town who just found out she is being deployed to Iraq in 3 weeks. She is being deployed for one year. She was a little bit in shock when I met her, obviously this was short notice. Anyway, I asked her if she had a video camera, and she said "no", and that she did want to buy one. But I know that the military does not pay a lot of money to our soldiers....

I just wanted to "throw" this request out there, in case someone had a camcorder that was a little bit older, maybe sitting around that they would like to donate to the soldier. It would be great if she could make a "video journal" of her experience there. Maybe one of us could even edit for her afterwards.
I wished I could give her a camera, but both of mine are fairly new and I use them on a regular basis.

Where are you and she located? It's not so much the camera but the supply of tapes she'll need, also if filming is allowed by security at her base. I work at DFW and see many disposable cameras on the troops, but not one video thus far. I have an older analog Sony, I'll check its condition and let you know this weekend. John

I think you will find that after Lyddie England GI's are no longer trusted with cameras! They even banned video phones!

Thanks for the responses,

Yeah, both the "tape" issue and the "security" issue did cross my mind. ...And she is Military Intelligence. I will check with her to see if she is even allowed to carry a video camera. If so, I will encourage her to keep a diary or maybe some sort of audio recording. I mean, this is history!

We both live in Orange County, California, but if she is allowed to carry a camera I would be able to pitch in with shipping costs and even buy some tapes for her to bring with her.

I still have not yet had a chance to contact the young woman. I will stop by her work location tomorrow and check if she can bring a camera/camcorder.

She leaves in about 2 weeks from now.

thanks again for your input on this subject.
