On this same topic - does anyone have an article with instructions on getting Sony CD's replaced? I have at least 5 music CDs that are effected by the rootkit.

Thanks,
Duncan

The Register which is gossipy British tech website has been following this closely.

By the way, you can prevent the rootkit from installing with a piece of gaffer's tape.

NY's Attorney General has found that CD's with the rootkit are still for sale in a lot of places in NY.

How do you use the gaffer's tape to stop it from installing?
How do I know if it is on my system, already (I doubt it, I don't play many recent Cd on my compupter, but perhaps one of my children may have)?
Thanks.

So long as you didn't allow it to install it will not install.
You can defeat the whole thing by disabling autorun on the CD drive, rip the CD with Vegas and burn a copy. The copy will be a real Red Book CD, no rootkit.

Sony closes in on new program to cleanse PCs

Sony at first offered an uninstall program to get rid of the software, but that was found to attract viruses. On Nov. 18, the label said that it planned to release an updated virus-free uninstall program. Almost three weeks later, that program is scheduled to be released Monday on Sony BMG's website. Many of the infected CDs are still in record stores.

Now maybe the recording artists will file a suit of their own. Think of all those lost royalties!
