Apple’s iPod and Microsoft’s Xbox have caused electronics powerhouse Sony to stumble. The company needed to find a knight in shining armor to run the place. They managed to find an actual knight. Correspondent Lesley Stahl talks with Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s surprising choice as CEO. He’s the first westerner to lead the company, yet he doesn’t speak Japanese and doesn’t have an M.B.A. Sony hopes to return to its former glory with the upcoming PlayStation 3 and digital Walkman devices. They may be just the armor that Sir Howard needs.

Just read in a news article today where this past year Sony quietly hired one of the main original Apple Quicktime engineers.

I'm sure that should help in some of their future innovations.

Watching this right now. Don't know how important this is for us and nothing specific is mentioned about Madison developments.

FWIW, Sir Howard sat thru an entire demonstration of Vegas at the CES show, and was dead center in the room with actor Tom Hanks. It's quite possible he wasn't even aware of Vegas until a few days ago, but as indicated in an earlier post, 2006 is a great year for Vegas.
BTW, Vegas Movie Studio ran away with the #1 sales position for 4th quarter 2005. This bodes well for all versions of Vegas.
Sir Howard surely has some great ideas about where the company should/can go, and he's got a heckuva track record.

That's pretty cool. I had figured that Sir Howard would have remained oblivious to the Madison folks for a little while yet.

So did the demonstrator, keep pointing out how this NLE does things others can't and it needs a bigger promotion budget?

What is second Pinnacle Studio? Was this the first time MovieSudio suprpassed Studio?

Thanks for the info Spot. Fingers are crossed for Vegas. Starting on an Avid then trying something new, I fell in love with Vegas. I've been a Vegas user since ver. 3.0 and was concerned when Sony bought us from SF. I'm hoping they'll stick to the roots of Vegas development and continue things. Sounded like they were going to change a lot of things over at Sony.

That's amazing, considering that Vegas is an infitesimal drop in the bucket of Sony Corporation. Were the sales of Sony about 53 billion this year? Just curious.

70 billion-

And hear what Sir Howard said about downloading and copyright -

"Steve Jobs came up with the iPod and iTunes, a simple system for people to download music — while Sony, worried about its record company — wasted precious time trying to figure out how to keep people from stealing songs."

This should sound familiar to anyone here who has followed all those pirating threads.

I only cought a bit - but heard that and thought - NO KIDDING. The way that Jobs hit it off with iTunes is that he made a simple *Legal* way of downloading, then iPods are most compatible with it, so then ppl. had to buy those up too. and it just pushes itself and pulls it self from both sides.

He's done with songs for consumers what should have been done from the beginning.

Just so, as I and many here have said - you have to go with the flow -you can't fight your customers. Kids don't want high fidelity finely tuned stereo systems like of old, they want lots of songs and they want them now!
