OT: Sony Dru 500a vs Toshiba 5002

Randy Brown wrote on 11/20/2005, 1:45 PM
Hey all,
Sony Dru 500a set at 4X or 2X takes 42min and 36min respectively (yes, faster on 2X). My Toshiba is taking just over 10 minutes to burn the same file (on 2X). The file was rendered with the batch render script in V5 using DVDA 2-pass with ac3 audio. Any ideas as to what could suddenly be the deal with the Sony?
TIA,
Randy

Did you just switch media? I have had problems with certain media and the Sony drives. The software reports burning at 4x/8x but actually burns at 1x.

As a matter of fact yes...Meritline had a sale on Ritek Arita GO4 4X DVD-R.
I had trouble with Ritek before but since everyone here likes it I thought I'd give it another try.

I have had the best luck with TDK media and the 500a. The 710 is more forgiving.

I've had good, consistant results with the cheap ProDisk with both burners but just curious as to why the Sony (4X) is taking so long when the Toshiba (2X) is only taking 10 minutes with the Ritek (rated at Meritline as 4X).
Thanks again,
Randy
