'bout time... :)

I hope this doesn't mean bad things for our boys in madison though.

Interesting.

If Sony werre to cut them loose, would that be better or worse for us?
TheHappyFriar wrote on 7/29/2005, 9:33 AM
really really worse. I haven't heard anyone wanted to buy them, odds are is would be eigther Microsoft, Alias, or Adobe (just taking a stab at other big companies trying to get as much computer video/3d software as possible).

eigther way it would be bad (well, maybe not alias)

Hmmmm.......there's a thought. Vegas/Acid/Soundforge bought by Adobe. Imagine having those integrated with products like Photoshop and After Effects.

I wonder how Adobe is doing anyways...I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't snapped them up.
TheHappyFriar wrote on 7/29/2005, 10:56 AM
i'd belive Adobe would take features, put them in their products & ditch the sony linup.

I'm suprised Adobe hasn't been bought out eigther. Perhaps they own enough of their own stock to not worry about that.

Makes me wish i had an extra $30 or $40 million lying around. Oh well.

Umm....*maybe* microsoft could buy Sony. BIG maybe. Guys, this is ALL of Sony. TVs, Stereos, CD's, Sony Music, consumeables, personal listening devices, Sony Pictures Digital, Sony Television, Sony PSP, cameras, camcorders, signage, computers, government devices, PDA's, broadcast, cell phones, car audio, oh...and software. Software is a big part of the company, but fairly small in the grand scheme of things. Plus and more importantly, software is starting to bring all/many of the other Sony products together.
30-40 million wouldn't buy much of any of Sony. Except for a truck load of their products.

Remember, Stringham's only been in there a couple months. I'll be surprised if he doesn't turn things around. Maybe we'll see an end to the stupidity of the laptop division putting a competitive product on the Sony laptop. Duh...what idiot came up with that idea, anyway? I wonder if Sony Corp would freak if the portable division put Panasonic batteries in the PSP box? You bet your a$$ they would.

I wonder how profitible Vegas and Acid are to Sony? Hmmm... Might not be a good fit for Adobe to purchase Vegas (and the rest). They already have so much tied up in Premiere and Audition.

I am not sure if Vegas would benefit by a Microsoft acquisition. It certainly would increase the amount of development money available, and I would love to see Vegas go to an entirely hardware accelerated environment (i.e. utilizing the powerful GPUs available in most modern PCs). Vegas certainly is a great piece of software that should be used as a model for software in general.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of another company that would be a good fit for Vegas.

I wonder if NVIDIA or ATI would have an interest (since you mentioned GPUs)

Anyway, we're making some really big leaps here.

On the Adobe issue, they're really big and well funded, from what I hear. I doubt that anyone's buying Adobe anytime soon. However, they recently bought Macromedia...

microsoft would buy a sony branch (ie media software) to convert it to it's own & take out a competitor.

this could be just a tempory thing because of the dev expense of the PS3, PSP & HD equipment. Those cost hundreds of millions to get going & will take years to pay for themselves.

Since there seems to be no mention of the profitability or otherwise of the Madison division, talk of sell offs seems somewhat premature.

It may only be a bit of drizzle ...... why build an ark?
Steve Mann wrote on 7/29/2005, 10:58 PM
Not even a drizzle. Sony Corp is talking about Billions - Capital "B" Billions. Divisions the size of Madison are lost in the rounding errors.
farss wrote on 7/30/2005, 12:46 AM
That's the thing, the little bits like their broadcast division are producing cutting edge stuff while the big bits that make the consummer stuff are way behind. Apart from the PSP I really cannot think of anything in the local Sony shop that I'd want. The last innovative thing they came up with was the Walkman and that was a long time ago, since then others have outpaced Sony's efforts which are now hobbled by their obsession over piracy, could there be a message there?
I know of no one who owns or would even want to own any Sony TV, LCD or plasma, HiFi, projector etc. The designs look dated or odd and the perfromance is below par. As noted in the article Samsung etc is producing a better product at a cheaper price.
Ah, well there is that dog, has anyone bought one or were Sony barking up the wrong tree on this one as well?
Liam_Vegas wrote on 7/30/2005, 3:40 AM
"Billion" Yen = Millions $. Still.... large numbers...

Farss:
The one time I purchased a Samsung product it smoked. ($699.00). The next one could not handle aspect ratios correctly. ($699.00 replacement). I then gave it to my guru buddy. So you see I do not agree at all on your opinion of Sony prouducts which I have a slew of that never give problems.

I have just read that article and some more from the same source. It appears that they like to cry DOOM about everything. The loss that quarter equates to around $60 M USD. Not small change, but not the end of the world for a company of Sony's size. Many compnaies post losses like that and projection drops like that on a regular basis. Sony has done better, yes. There are changes coming, but I agree that Madison is a number lost in the rounding error level.

Sony has always been a farsighted company that works for longterm returns, not the short term that drives the stock market and the reporters. Anyone who knows the company well, does not behave like a 'chicken little.' Some times it pays off big time. Some times they take it on the chin.

I want to say one other thing that will be unpopular. Vegas and the Madison line could be sold or changed at any time no matter who owns it. That is the nature of this market and the tech invovled. Don't waste time and precious energy worrying about it. The product you own is good. If anything ever happens, it won't change the software that you have on your system today. Everyone always borrows trouble discussing and worrying about something that they can not influence or predict. If you were an insider and could influence it, you couldn't talk about it anyway. That's the law.

Smile and enjoy the great tools you have. Don't worry, be happy ...
