OT: Sony to announce EX3 at NAB

For those who don't frequent DVInfo:
You'll be able to read about it here;
http://www.dvuser.co.uk/content.php?CID=174
once the embargo is lifted.
General buzz seems to be interchangeable optics, TC in, frame rate on jog wheel. Does not make the EX1 obsolete. I'm glad to see the EX lineup expanding and that there's another camera using SxS cards.

I wouldn't be suprised if 8.0c came out this week.

Just read the article. All I can say is WOW. Now if there are some equally cool Vegas announcements.....

Apart from the TC in/out I'm not seeing a great deal to get overly excited about especialy as it seems it'll come at a premium price. The EX3 has the same lens as the EX1 and it comes off. Then it seems you can fit an optional B4 lens mount i.e. that costs even more. But if I grasp this right the lens that comes with the camera doesn't fit that mount as it's not a B4 lens!

If you're into 35mm GG adaptors then you sure do have something to get excited about. Being able to get the existing lens off the camera is the only sane way to mount such an adaptor in my opinion. Given one of the odditities of the EX1's zoom in manual even moreso.

Early days, hope I'm wrong about some of this.

It's almost double the price.

It's almost double the price.

From the DVuser article:
The recommended retail price of the EX3 will be £5995 inc. vat.
This is approximately £1500 more than the EX1.
That works out to approx. $12,000.00 & $3,000.00 respectively.

That is correct.

If you assume that we pay 20%+ VAT here.

Which we don't :O).

Subtract 20% and you get $10K. That's MSLP.

But wait! They usually charge more in Europe, because they can, and because they have to pay bennies and a living wage to even the most junior of store clerks.

Subtract 10% for that (it is often MUCH more than that), that leaves us with $9,000.

The EX1 cost $7850 MSLP, but street was $6,450, i.e. about 18% less.

$9,000 MSLP - 18% = $7395.

Umm, vrrr, ummm, about $945 more than the EX1.

Of course the very rapidly declining dollar may mean that Sony allocates 90% of the EX3 production to Europe and Asia where the currency is backed by strong monetary policies, and we get them here when Europe and Asia have finished burping with satisfaction.

Oh, the cost of freedom... :O) [After our children and grand children have paid off the $3 trillion for getting rid of Saddam's WMD around 2038 or so, we should be getting better allocations of the EX25 here.]

In the meantime, it is already clear that Canon is shipping their hot new cameras to Europe and Asia first. And why shouldn't they? Hooray for free trade and the glory of profit!

So yesterday at Sony's NAB "city" (booth), they said " under $13,000 and delivery later in 2008:

Also other goodies there including a high end OLED viewfinder (for the F23 and F35 crowd I suspect).

Too bad they didn't design it to record to Compact Flash instead of Sony's ridiculously overpriced SxS media. $900 for 16 gb of storage? Give me a break!

Actually, SxS would be fine if they didn't limit which SxS cards you could use. I'm using a 32GB Transcend that cost me $150 with my Z7, but if I had to use Sony media like the EX1, it would cost me a whole lot more.

Transcend also has http://www.ecost.com/Detail.aspx?edp=3834721116GB[/link] and http://www.ecost.com/Detail.aspx?edp=3834722932GB[/link] SxS cards that I'm pretty sure would work just fine if they were allowed.

Hopefully future firmware EX1/EX3 updates will allow a greater choice of media.

Why limiting your hardware to work only with your own brand of media isn't a violation of anti-trust laws, I'll never know.

Of course, even if it were illegal under U.S. law, you'd still need someone to enforce it. Not likely to happen under this administration.

Maybe one of our friends over in the EU can slap Sony on this.

Friends in the EU? We still have friends?

Nah, forget that for now and just watch Philip Bloom go through his EX3 camera in this high quality video presentation.
