Sony has announced that it will release an SDK to 4K developers this month for its recently launched XAVC video format used by the new F5 and F55 CineAlta camcorders. Licensees include Apple, Adobe. The new specification uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression, which allows up to 12-bit color depth, 60 fps shooting speed at 4k and 180 fps in HD. So far, fourteen companies including Adobe and Apple have signed on as licensees, and Sony says the format may come to consumer products as well. Details of the program along with an SDK will arrive this month, just in time for a possible Ultra HD onslaught.

Does anybody know if Sony Vegas 12 support the new XAVC from Sony?

It does for reading the files.

Apple already support it in FCP X. That might be read only though.

A couple of hours ago I tried playing 4K from the F55 on YT, streamed and played OK. It'll be a while before I can afford a new house to accomodate a 4K monitor though.

I'm pretty happy with the 2K thing. The 4K I don't know.

Marco, does that mean you can edit XAVC natively on the timeline and render as you do with any other common file format?

Yes, you can import and edit XAVC natively in the current build of VP12. Though you cannot yet render to XAVC.

Sony's own words

Also, XAVC is a common format. AVC. Nothing special or new here.

It is a 5.2 profile which some decoders might need some tweaks to support. Things like 12 bit.
