OT sorta - AGC on camcorders

I've got a Sony TRV-38 which is a good camera (for the price) but it has AGC (automatic gain control) on the audio. Is there a way to defeat this? (I'm not optimistic here).

Alternatively, what sorts of tricks are recommended to allow for SOME level of control on the audio? I assume an "upstream" mic mixer would help, but you still have the problem of the AGC ultimately adding in noise. Any ideas?

Not sure about that specific camera but go into the menu and highlight the audio section---on most Sony's that is where you can turn the AGC off. If it's not there then I doubt that you can.
