ot: sorting fonts

well, i now have something like 3000 odd fonts (NOT installed!) in an assortment of folders.

i have 'printers apprentice' which is great for viewing, but it's very limited in recognising / sorting fonts into families and the like.

can anyone recommend a program that'll compare fonts, find similarities, etc., xp used to do this, but win 7 doesn't (and if i remember, xp only did it in the system font folder?)

anyway, i'm sure i have the same font under different names, or fonts that look so similar as to be indistinguishable, etc.,

and no, sifting through them it's not something i want to do on long, cold winter nights...

I have used Sue Fisher's "The Font Thing" for years -

http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html

Runs on XP just fine and I understand it runs on Windows 7 just fine, but the current installer doesn't work on Windows 7. You have to manually install the thing. I'll be attempting this in the next few weeks when I receive my new system.

Navigate to the download page. If running Windows 7 just download the ZIP file without the installer/uninstaller.

This is a fine program.

Try xfonter the vacuum cleaner of font installers. you can suckup type faces and fonts within the type faces spew out a run down of supported code, Unicode, pages etc

And there’s more

for designing it will let you explore your creative side with add color, drop shadow , gradient, background , show font style and wade through the trillion fonts on your PC to see how it looks

if this is not enough it will let you…explore containing folders on multiple drives

But wait……there’s more….. if you order your copy. now ..It’s FREE

I am not sure about 64 bit ......There is always a catch with these ads

Ushere - bummer. I love that program. I found this on a separate site:

"Go to the website's download page at LINK and download the non-installer, the second version labeled as Zipped EXE and help files (483K). The installer-package version is apparently not compatible with Windows 7 (or 64-bit, which is what I run).

I unzipped the contents into a folder I named The Font Thing in my downloads folder, then double click the tft.exe file to launch it. If you get a popup/notification just click OK, and The Font Thing will run. Granted it's a little quirky at times, but it's useable. "

This is what I plan to do when my new system arrives. Did you run the installer or do it manually? Thanks for all info.
