OT: Suggestions for Pshop?

Spot|DSE wrote on 8/15/2004, 5:09 PM
Hey gang, out here in the desert, we've finally joined the modern world, with the advent of DSL. No more satellite for us.
Got it installed today, but after installation of the DSL system, Photoshop CS won't load any longer. It hangs on boot. Photoshop 7.01 is fine, fires right up. Both access the web automatically for updates. I can't seen anything on the Adobe site about this, would surely appreciate some input if you have ideas?
Photoshop CS is a great tool, but it sure seems to cause an awful lot of problems.

I had similar problems with a number of programs when I first got DSL. Eventually discovered the modem and the interconnect software supplied by the DSL provider was the issue. It added a lot of crap to the system that did not need to be there.

Fixed the problem by going to a Westel Wirespeed modem and a linksys router. Now there is no software on the individual computers other than the normal windows networking.

Hopefully the DSL provider has figured this out by now and that is not your problem.

Good luck and CS is a great package.

One thing you can do is to block all LAN to WAN traffic and look at the
log file your router maintains for blocked activity.

This has helped me several times in the past. Also found a virus in the past.
Check to see "GAMING MODE" is turned on in the router. This speeds up
validations.

Can you tell us more about the DSL modem and router you are using?

It's a standard modem, far as I know. (what do I know about DSL modems besides almost nothing)
No special software, just had to ping the router with an IP address, then configure my specific IP address. Then the modem feeds into my Gigaswitch where all computers are connected. The laptop used to configure the modem isn't even connected directly to the modem. I didn't load any specific software on any machine. Just configured the Actiontec modem via the IP/HTTP page that interfaces with software in the modem, disconnected the modem from the laptop, connected it to the switch, and off I go. Had to reset the network IP on one machine as it conflicted with the IP of the modem, but that was it. Everything seems to be solid, excepting PshopCS. Thanks for having a run at this, I'm still stymied.

Doesn't Photoshop CS have a fit every time the system configuration changes...?
Spot|DSE wrote on 8/15/2004, 7:59 PM
Yeah, but to Pshop, the only thing that should be changed is that I deleted the satellite drivers. Moreover, it usually comes up with a dialog that says I need to re-register. This issue is one where it just hangs during load, giving me a white screen with the GUI around it, no dialog. If I click on the workspace outside the white area, it does nothing. If I click inside the white space, I get a "not responding" error, and can't do anything except force it to close.

Is there a change to the firewall? For instance, I have zone alarm on my system and you have to specify a trusted network. SInce the hardware has changed, your IP addresses may have changed as well.

The point about not installing the DSL provider's software is a good one. You shouldn't need any of it. I use a netgear firewall router right after the modem and of course I can't install their software on it. And it works just fine.

SPOT, have you tried loading up Photoshop with the LAN disabled on that PC to see if it has something to do with the updates its trying to get from the web? very wierd problem...

Do you have the dark grey Actiontec 701 DSL modem?

You might have old firmware.
Try going to a website like www.disney.com
if it fails to load then you need to upgrade your modem's firmware

Nope, it's a black box, Disney loads fine, Qwest claims I have the latest and greatest of everything they offer.
I've uninstalled/reinstalled CS and it still won't load if the NIC is connected to the switch. Adobe is useless, saying "It should work." Duh. For 450.00 it better work.
richard-courtney wrote on 8/18/2004, 11:56 AM
...... it still won't load if the NIC is connected to the switch.

Any possibility you have two or more computers that are running
CS or other higher end Adobe software?

It might be a problem that the software thinks you are running two
copies. We had a problem with using cloning software for emergency
backups. One software package saw the same product key on another
computer.

It is possible the satellite connection (such as Tachyon) had enough
lag that the check for a dupicate key took too long.

Sorry can't be anymore help. A tough one to guess at. Good luck.

Did you ever get this fixed, Spot?

The reason I ask is that I've just come across a message from someone who was reporting what sounds like the same problem, and who eventually fixed it by deleting the Photoshop preferences (.php) file.

Apparently this file can get corrupted which can prevent Photoshop from loading. It looks like this file gets left behind after uninstalling the software so uninstalling and re-installing won't solve this particular problem. But if you delete the preferences file a new default one is created the next time you attempt to start Photoshop, and all should be well.

I know nothing about Photoshop (I've always used PaintShopPro) so I don't know whether there might be another reason for the problem you are having but it might be worth trying this idea - if the program won't start then it can't really make things worse and it might solve your problem as it did for this other bloke.

Best of luck.

Mark
