OT - SW Cal questions

Working on calibrating my 5.1 setup, both mixing and theater rooms. Have Bob Katz' book - using his procedure.

Using 500-2KHz bandlimited pink noise for the 5 mains, and 20-120hz bandlimited pink noise for the sub, and an RS SPL meter.

BK says bring the SW level up to 10 dB more than the mains to compensate for the ear's lack of LF sensitivity. When I do that they are LOUD, way too loud. So what am I doing wrong?

Should the SPL meter be A weighted or C weighted?

Katz' book's description is a little ambigous in how it's described. I "think" it says use A weighting with full bandwidth pink noise and to use C weighting with bandlimited pink noise, even less clear on how this applies to the SW.

thanks,
Rocky

Try it C and on slow, fast response can be MUCH different. When biasing the SW against the mains, dont just add ten db on the knobs as compared to the mains knobs, do it with the meter as well, so set the mains first. It should make sense then.

If the subs still seem way too loud, keep it playing and walk around the room a bit and see if there is some buildup somewhere

My book is at home, but my recollection was that you use full-bandwidth with C-weighting and filtered-with A-weighting (A-weighting rolls off pretty quickly below 1 kHz).

Katz's website says to use C-weighting with the file he provides, which appears to be full bandwidth pink noise.
