We looked and passed.
If you want a light for your EX3 then the Comer 1800 is pretty good value for the money. I have one and in conjunction with the PL-U95 battery that you can also buy from LA Colorshop you're right to go, for hours and hours.

The flip down lens gizmo on the 1800 is actually quite usefull I've found and used it a couple of time just to throw a bit of fill into faces. Clearly it will not fill the 16:9 frame and the Swit is even worse at this.

If you want serious fill outdoors then the Frezzi HMIs are the go but they are blinding and expensive.

"... the Frezzi HMIs are the go..."

Actually, I have one. And you're right, it is blinding. The on-camera talent is always complaining about it.

I'm looking to downgrade, but I can't find anyone to buy the Fezzi.

Thank you, Bjorn, for the reviews. Very helpful!

"The on-camera talent is always complaining about it."

As the lady from Frezzi said to us at NAB, best used only for presidents and prime ministers :)

We've got the little softbox for ours which does help a bit.
Getting it up a bit higher so the talent isn't looking straight into it and the lens also helps. I picked up a couple of the K-Tek cold shoe extenders off eBay very cheaply last year. Outrageouly expensive at normal list price but a suprising bargain at the $35 I paid for them. Originally made for getting microphones up higher on the camera they work a treat for lights on small cameras because unlike the Israeli arms the K-Tek is very light weight.

Yes, the soft box does help, but the real killer (for me) is the bloody battery. It weights about as much as the camera, if not more!

I''ve gotten to the point where I really dread pulling the Frezzi out for use.

Yikes matey, which Frezzi and which battery?

We've got the MRAX2.

We can run that from the camera battery so long as it's got a D-Tap, get either the Swit or the NoName PL-U95.

It's a mini-sungun (package), similar to this one...

Mine is a bit older, so the battery is much larger and heavier.

I have and use the Switronix TL-50 Light . I also use the Bebob Engineering DV-Lux. The Switronix is good although a a bit of a hot spot, but it normally doesn't show. Unless I need the extra brightness of the TL-50, I still use the Bebob.
