OT - System volume vs playback volume

If I am playing back a video or audio file, listening through my phones, and I hit some errant button, Windows XP blares one of its warning sounds into my ears and it's really annoying - I'm very fussy about my hearing. It is very frustrating to carefully adjust the volume of the playback material only to have the goofy system beep or tadong some warning into your ear because of something going on elsewhere in windows.

Any way to control this?

Many times I've jumped and almost hit the ceiling when editing a very quiet section with the volume on my headphones turned up.

Couldn't you look in Control Panel, Sounds and Multimedia and select <none> for the beep(s). Works in W2k.

I disabled all Windows sounds the day I got my computer.

Go to "run" and type in mmsys.cpl and the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" pannel will open. Click on the "Sounds" tab and you can selcet what events you want sounds for (or not) and what sound you want to play. Or you can just set the "Sound scheme" option to "No Sounds".

Ditto since Windows 95. At first I substituted the wav files for things like explosions, but after the novelty wore off I just disabled the sounds completely. Choose "None".
