From 1999 to 2006 I used nothing but Costco TDK tapes (the ones that come in a soft plastic box). Then last year I discovered that nearly every tape in the pack I bought had a dropout, which is not so bad for DV work but is a showstopper for HDV. It could have been a bad batch; I don't know. Anyway, I switched to the Sony DVM60prl tapes, which can be found online for less than $3 each. To date, not a single dropout. For special work I'll use the brown Sony HDV tapes which can be bought for about $10.

EDIT:
I don't know if these are the tapes to which you refer. There is no "superior" marking on them. Maybe TDK is now offering a higher-grade version.

I've always used Sony 63min HDV tapes and never had a drop out. I will run one of these tapes through the camera and let it be known what I find.
