OT: The Images & Hyperlinks [Deleted]

ForumAdmin wrote on 4/13/2007, 9:04 AM
Sorry all, but we needed to delete the thread related to inserting java script into these forums. We have also disabled the ability to do so for security reasons.

We are working, right now, on writing code to offer a similar option for users to allow the display of images and videos in their My Account preferences. More info to follow.

Understood. Thanks for considering an acceptable alternative!

Exceedingly excellent! Smashing! Thank you . .thank you!

I didn't create any of the code, but I did use it once. I wasn't trying to cause any problems and I apologize if I did.
ForumAdmin wrote on 4/13/2007, 10:50 AM
No need for an apology. This was all clearly done with good intentions. We just need to do this on the server side so we can make sure we give you a consistent and secure environment.

See this sticky for information on new markup codes. Feel free to reply here if you see any problems.

Thanks all for your patience and suggestions.

yeah! It's just like bbcode now!

But request: can you do "[link]" AND "[url]"? the url is exactly like bbcode & should (hopefully) allow us to use places like imageshack.us when posting images w/o editing anything.

Next step would be email notification, don't you think guys?

The link to the Forum Settings appears to be broken. I was going to change the setting so I can view images "in line."

Broke for me last night, and I just checked again and it's still broken.

That would be fantastic; I think a lot of people post topics/replies here and then forget about it.

Hey SCS Forum people: thanks for the updated bbs code stuff -- especially for how quickly you guys got this implemented. I think it will make things much nicer here (assuming people don't start routinely putting images in their posts as a "signature").

I have a request -- how about taking the "Post New Topic" link off of the individual thread pages, and only having it on the main forum pages. It's not like it happens every day, but its fairly common for people to click that and accidentally create a new thread when they really intended to reply to the thread they are viewing.

Just my 2 cents.

Please try the forum setting changes again. I wasn't able to reproduce the problem here, but I did make a change that may solve the bug.

Sorry about the issue and thanks for letting us know.

Works now. Thanks.
fldave wrote on 4/14/2007, 2:10 PM
Works for me now, also.

Thanks tons!

test

did it work? :)

ForumAdmin:

Sorry to be a bit anal here, but someone might want to double-check that markup page for errors.

I tried to show an example here, but I forget how to show the literal code...
TheHappyFriar wrote on 4/14/2007, 4:13 PM
hmm... possible bug: when you put an image in a link to an image (IE link the word "picture" to an image so it's clickable) it shows the full picture instead.
ForumAdmin wrote on 4/16/2007, 10:05 AM
HappyFriar, If you want to link to an image, make sure to use the [link format rather than the [img format.

Thanks all for the other forum suggestions. This recent enhancement was related to some other work we were doing on the site, but we are hoping to make some forum improvements in the next 6-9 months.

We will certainly consider your comments here, and in the other thread related to the load times. You can also feel free to email your comments to us via our web support form since it's a little off topic here.

Thanks.

ForumAdmin,

Would it be possible for you to share a little what changes you are planning to implement in the next 6-9 months? That way we will make better informed suggestions.

Understood, if you tell, people will gripe and complain while others will like it, but regardless of whether or not you tell us up front or we just find out one day, people will still have their opinions.

Thanks,

I'm really enjoying getting used to these new changes. Thanks guys. Many, many times over.

Let me also say that these forums are NOT reliant on fancy designs and graphics, because it is the content here that is gold. From a design perspective, I'm so glad to see that you've kept things the straight-forward way that they have been.

Now, I'll follow what some people have been saying about email notification.

I'm not sure how you organize the forums here, but if you keep all the topics or usersnames in a database table, it should not be difficult to add a column called `subscribed`. This column could probably be added to either the Topic table, or the UserName table. Inside this `subscribed` column would be a list of UserNames or Email Addresses or whatever it is that you use to efficiently organize us here.

Then, with a few lines of code you could add subscription features for each topic. From there you can do things like "Email Notifications" and even "Browse by Subscriptions".

I throw this out there because the nature of these forums is to share meaningful content. Therefore, a content-related feature is totally inline with what the majority of the users come to this board for.
