OT: Tiny G35 makes for big WOW!

Coursedesign wrote on 3/20/2006, 7:20 PM
Check out this beautiful short film shot with a tiny Cinemek G35 adapter on a DVX100a:

SIMILO

The small size of this DV camera adapter for 35mm SLR lenses allowed the film to be shot with simple means, see this photo.

It's easy to forget that we don't need 4K resolution to make great movies.

All that remains now is to add some scenes where people get shot, a car chase, some gangsta rap, and maybe a couple of thunderous space battles, and it should be ready for release.

Well, I guess I'm kidding.

This short is humbling, imho.

You might've meant "great looking movies". Lots of eye candy there, but I'm not seeing much else :)
Coursedesign wrote on 3/20/2006, 10:30 PM
Well, I thought the eye candy was used very effectively to communicate some human emotions.

It seems only one emotion has gotten major coverage recently in popular films: fear, in the form of slasher movies.

Like I said, no car chases or gangsta rap, so it's not for everybody.
jlafferty wrote on 3/20/2006, 10:43 PM
Well, you seem to be making some narrow presumptions -- I'm not into slasher/gangster movies either, I just found this equally vacuous...

To each their own.
Coursedesign wrote on 3/20/2006, 11:28 PM
My sincere apology if this came across the wrong way.

I absolutely did not mean to imply that you were into slasha/gangsta movies, just that there are different styles.

I'm interested in human emotions because they are such a large part of who we are.

In some way I take solace in that even as movies aren't so focused on different emotions for the moment (this comes and goes regularly), today's TV programming is very much focused on them, in the form of reality shows of all kinds.

But I agree with you that there is a lot of vacuous content out there, and I certainly could not stand the golden moldie film, "My Dinner with Andre". In fact it made me want to throw up.

Themes of scene shooting; "Blade Runner", car and room scenes, "Mad Max" highway scene with boy down.

Nice shooting with the 100, tho, a great amount of color work was done in post. Plus some serious post editing and upconverting.

Thanks for sharing this coursed... I liked it a lot. To each his own as stated above. It looked pretty amazing being that it was shot on that camera. Derek

"that camera" LOL

dude the DVX is prolly the most robust and best performing camcorder of its formfactor and format on the market. Its performance, colour gradation, tweakability and general adaptiveness to any situation has been proven over and over again, with or without assistance from these adapters
To be honest, i prefer it over my Z1's any day...

as for the adapter.. where can i get one?? also what kind (canon, nikon?????) lense's mount to it?? Ive got some 35mm units sitting here

Cinemek's web site is down, and they are not taking orders currently.

Better to try the Redrock M2 adapter. Made in Texas, costs less money, and the company seems pretty cool too..
jlafferty wrote on 3/21/2006, 8:52 AM
The G35 has been "not for sale (yet)" for about a year now and about a month away from mass production they've changed the design somewhat dramatically (introduced a moving mechanism) to accomodate HD res. The only hope for that adapter is to hold out and wait an indefinite amount of time.

Meanwhile, there are two adapters coming to market soon, the Brevis35 from Dennis Wood (in April) and my Go35Pro (in May) that will provide equal/better quality than the G35 at nearly half the price...

We're very happily using the RedRock Micro M2 here. They'll have some pretty cool products at NAB as well.

I have ordered an SG35 35mm adaptor from Wayne Kinney for my FX1. It should arrive this week or next. It uses a spinning ground glass element and looks similar to the RedRock Micro35. I'll report how the video looks after I get it and test it out. Wayne's coming out with an SG35 PRO in the next few months which will be about $500 -$700 US. His new website is still under construction.

beautiful imagery - very nice shooting - good sound, excellent communication of emotion etc... But.... HOW ABOUT A WARNING - NUDITY - SEX - ADULT CONTENT!!! - sorry - but I was NOT expecting that, and would have appreciated a warning. It was a very VERY well done short IMO - but I warn folks when there's religious content, and I don't even really think that's terribly necessary - but the whole world thinks it's necessary to warn for this kind of content :) - don't take this as a diss or anything, just think there needs to be a warning - heck - you might even get more views because of it :).

Dave,

My second apology in less than 24 hours. Of course I should have alerted to the partial nudity.

I guess I saw it as too incidental.

Product of my upbringing.

When network television edited feature films for prime time viewing where I grew up, they edited out the violence and kept the nudity.

Why?

Because violence was considered obscene while nudity was natural, in the sense that everybody looks about the same under their clothes.

Here in the U.S. it's the other way around, and I need to be more sensitive about it.

When I grew up, a teen boy and a teen girl could even go tent camping together without thinking of sex.

That innocence has unfortunately disappeared since, as teens nowadays are facing immense pressure to become adults at an early age, and all of our culture is filled with stereotyped explicit references to what it means to be "a man" or to be "a woman."

I don't know about you, but I was sure thinking about it. I just didn't act on it.

I really can't find anyting obscene in this film... It's actually beautiful, respectful and I wouldn't mind showing that to my kids if I had some, it's natural and I'd rather have them look at that than triple x movies where the woman is treated like an animal... But then, that's how I was raised, I guess we have to consider everybody's culture. If i had posted the same link I wouldn't have thought of giving out a warning, much too common over here.

as I read it, my comments come across as upset looking - there weren't meant to be - I'm sorry if they did. However - I just feel that the only woman I'm supposed to see naked, or nekid ;-), for that matter, is my wife. I do appreciate the appology. Violence (unless terribly massive) never bothers me really - because I know it's all fake. Now I know what you're going to say - most of the breasts in film and video are too ;-) - but never the less it's deffinately real nudity - that's what bothers me. Sorry if I came across upset sounding.

Thanks again.

It's not like this nudity was "gratuitus" at least in the mainstream eyes - but I don't think that it would have been any less without it (that's just my opinion and I mean no disrespect to the creators). I think it could have been JUST as beautiful with no nudity and still been very meaningfull.

Just my opinion.

You see it all the time in movies, seems like they have a totally meaningless scene just to show some hotty "nekid", guess it sells tickets , but anyway what a polite thread this is, sorry thankyou and all.
pretty cool
FrigidNDEditing wrote on 3/21/2006, 2:55 PM
Confusion strikes me here - "but anyway what a polite thread this is" - was this sarcasim or truth? - I'm really not able to tell.

Going back to my "roots" the question would have been asked: "What'sa matter with you, boy, ain't you had no fetchin' up?" ;o)

BTW, thanks for the warning, Dave.

"..................I think it could have been JUST as beautiful with no nudity and still been very meaningfull." well maybe, but the short would have less market appeal. The story is about emotional connection, an adult theme. Maybe IDF's should "rate" their short. I really doubt that Coursedesign even thought about the nudity issue and really was excited about the 35mm being used with such good results. Yes, I was surprise about the nudity in short, but more because I expected more of a demonstration of the 35mm being used than a great short.

I like the short and thank you, Coursedesign for posting the link.

Hey Spot, did you find a workaround for the inverted image? Is this still an issue? I was looking at the same adaptor and read that the image was inverted. I know fixing it in post is simple but what about monitoring during recording?

Hey DJPadre! Wasn't dissing the dvx. I'm by no means a pro videographer, but what I meant was it's amazing how beautiful it looks being that it's shot with a mini dv cam. I've been in a video filmed with dvx 100's and sat through the editing process with the ones who filmed it and was amazed at the quality of the vid that it got in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. That's true of all good cameras though (in the hands of someone who knows how to use it) comment. I'm a musician for a living, not a camera man. :o)

As far as the nudity, I was really hoping my girlfriend would not walk in during one of those moments..."I thought you said you read late at night!" haha Any way, I thought it was done tastefully, but yes, would have been just as effective without it. Just my opinion. Again, thanks for sharing it. Derek
